a while. Especially since I'm nearing retirement and we need to save money.

I am stuck between the Bisley Vaquero Single action 357 simulated Ivory grips, stainless steel 5.5" barrel and the Blued Vaquero Single action 357 with wood grips.

I will only be using it to take to the range and as a show piece. I have a LCR 357 which is my carry gun, and ton's of 357 brass. Going with the 357 because I just don't want to have to deal with reloading a different caliber, I already have 4 dies to load .380, 9mm, 38spl, 357, 44spl and 44mag.

I would really like both, but can only get one. I will shoot copper plated 158 gr, and probably shoot 50 rounds a month out of it. Though if my wife wants to shoot it, I will let her shoot 38's out of it (which are all lead).

That's a tough choice as it's very easy to like them both. Guess it would come down to which grip frame feels the most comfortable to you. If you want a gun to show off on occasion then the stainless Bisley, with a little help from Mother's Mag Polish, could be made into the shiniest looking sixgun by far. Let us know which one you go with.

You need to put your foot down and tell her you will get as many guns as you want. I did that with my first wife and.......

I was going to say - retire without a wife, then get both guns... and some more. :D

But why not compromise and buy a New Vaquero with standard plowhandle in stainless? And you could put some bonded ivory grips on it for $28:

Mine was a really sweet six shooter (traded it - plus another gun - to my brother for a Colt SAA last year):

If you are going to shoot (whichever) with high-end loaded .357 Magnum cartridges you'll find the Bisley (style) handle to be advantageous. The original SAA was designed to roll up in the hand to position the thumb for re-cocking. With modern Magnum loads you'll tend to get vertical stringing on the target.

My guns are holding value better than my SD IRA and 401K! (Not that far from kidding!!)

Frankly, I think Armybrat's suggestion is a winner.

OR just shop for a low cost used, but not abused Blackhawk. They are all nice, IMHO.

I'd go with the Bisley for the sole reason of the finish. Stainless is really easy to clean and there's less worry about scratches and wear. I wish all my guns were stainless, but it took me a while to figure that out.

Thanks guys...

Guess I will have to get a bonus next year and use that to get the second one :) Going to look at Armybrat's suggestion, need to find where to get the Ivory handles.

Here's what a stainless Vaquero, albeit a very shiny one, would look with Tru-Ivory grips:

Definitely can be made into a show piece.

Altamont Ivories are quite nice and can be had with the Ruger medallion I'm fairly sure.

Any stainless steel Vaquero can be polished up as bright as you wish.

That is a tough choice between a good wife and a new gun!:uhoh:
But you'll make the right decision in the end.
Let me know how new gun shoots!:neener:

For any suggesting he put his foot down dont forget she might get half the guns if it goes south.....

Am I safe in assuming your idea for her to get a part time job didn't go over well?

I used to have a Vaquero in .44 magnum. Very nice gun. I have been told that the .357 caliber variants are a bit heavier than the .44 or .45 versions. I still want one in .357 though.

Ha.
I've seen the stuff you've been posting lately. Don't look like it does her much good. :)
I sold my boat a few months back and have been "reinvesting". It was a expensive paid for boat. She tried to get grubbies on some of it . Tried. That, and I'm not ashamed to say and I do well. Kids are fed and clothed , 401 savings is maxxed out. I can buy some guns dammit.

I have an ex wife that used to say things like that. I would get the Bisley.

I have a 45 Colt Bisley, a 44 Spl Blackhawk, a Blackhawk 45 acp/45 Colt conversion, a 45 Vaquero and a Single Seven 327 Fed mag...not counting the SP 101's, LCR's and S&W's.

I don't like these made-up dilemmas. If you really can only buy one, then here:
http://freedomarms.com

Look at the 905-25 Premier Grade w/fixed sights Model 97, then choose your barrel length.

Even though I like Blue guns more than Stainless in this case I would buy the Bisley Vaquero with the White grips. No real reason other than I like it.

Both of my cents:

I like the way blued SAA (and SAA styled) pistols age while I distinctly dislike the way hi-polish or nickeled pistols age.

I'm one of the rarer one's who dislike the "Bisley" style grip.

So...

And as far as "... last gun... ". My marital interpretation of that would be: "You can only add one more gun for a while..." Which means that if there is something - anything - in the safe which gets shifted by these new priorities, fine... Out with the old and in with the new and the overall numbers have not changed.

Good luck in any case.

Todd.
