How good is the Ruger Scout Rifle?

Nice rifle, overpriced. If I was looking at Scout rifles I'd probably take the Savage, 18" barrel, less money, similar features. But then I'd start thinking about what I was going to use it for, a handy all purpose rifle particularly great at nothing but serviceable for most things, and go buy an AR, AK, or even a nice lever gun.

I really like mine. 18 inch ss. Easy MOA with leupold IER scope and 168gr match ammo. Lots of fun and lots of theroretical utility?

Might be able to get one at a decent price.

So how good are they?

It's a Ruger. Well made and built to last. A brand new one will need breaking in to smooth the bolt cycling, but after that it's all gravy.

The GSR is higher priced than a Savage Scout and a Mossberg Scout. You need to hold them side by side in your own hands and see if the better fit, finish, and execution of the Ruger GSR is worth the extra money to you. To me it is and I have no buyers remorse in the purchase of my GSR.

Compare them all

I bought a RSR and love it,but its a bit heavy [ if your older ,and I am ].

It shoots amazingly well and will take game easily at 200 yards [ possibly further, but I have not tried ].

I also bought a Ruger American shorty,MUCH lighter and pleasant to carry.

Recoil is not a big difference.

I would do as others suggest, look at and HANDLE [ side by side if possible ] all the "scout" rifles.

I believe they are all pretty equal,UNLESS you actually need a long range rifle = then its your pick .

My Scout is a handy rifle, very heavy, caliber 5.56, magazine is an expensive sheet metal affair designed for .308 with a plastic insert for .223 and built like a tank. Unfortunately the mag is too long (10 rounds), has sharp corners and is designed for combat not hog hunting. So far no polymere short mags are available. All of the sheet metal mags are a stupid $75 price. I mounted the scope in traditional fashion and have found it to be exceptionally accurate at 100 yds. My rifle has a laminated stock.

They aren't as good as the Steyr scouts, but aren't bad for the price. They are nifty little hunting rifles.

They are handy little carbines with decent triggers and in my experience very good accuracy with factory ammo.

My only complaint, and it applies to all Ruger 77's, is that they don't make ultra low 30mm rings for the excellent Ruger specific ring bases for mounting straight tube scopes.

I love my Ruger Scout in 308. I got the composite stock with the break. Recoil is low and the rifle is handy, light and accurate. Excellent hunting or field rifle. Very happy. So much I got one for my son. He loves his as well.

No problems ringing 6" steel at 200 yds with mine (.308), and my 2.75x Burris scout scope. Haven't had time to really test it out, guess I'm gonna be scope shopping.
