30-30, 165g coated lead, IMR-4227, which primer?

SARuger, neat thing about the 30-30 Winchester is you can access the chamber to seat a sized case in there with your thumb, AND you can tell if the rim is seated flush to the chamber usually by looking or using feeler gages. If your shoulder is not being pressed back to "zero" on sizing, you can see it pretty easily.

An alternative that *may* work... In my 32-40 Schutezen rifle I'll use large pistol primers as they throw a milder column of sparks than rifle primers, and they are demonstrably easier to ignite. I don't remember your charge weight, but if your pressures are pretty low, you might try this. 'Course the pistol primer seats deeper in the case, and your firing pin might not reach it, but it is so easy to test for... just seat a pistol primer in an empty case, chamber it, point the rifle in a safe direction (I put the muzzle in an old comforter I use to cover an old motorcycle) and pull the trigger.

Last option, Federal primers for years had the reputation of being the "softest" primers, or easiest to ignite. Maybe try a Federal Large Rifle Primer and see what you get?

The 30/30 Headspaces on the Rim .... the thickness is what controls it ....

IF your gun is manufactured with the correct head space, IF the brass has the correct thickness and IF the primer is seated correctly ....then the only other problem would be a possible firing pin/spring issue ... this is all dependent on if the ammo fits in the chamber ....

If the brass is not "sized" enough ... then it is not going to fit the chamber .... and the action will not close ...

If it is sized too much ...it will still fit and fire because the RIM holds the brass from going too far into the chamber(the action will close) ... it should still fire ... but brass life will be very short ....

I got my comparator today and I do have a head space/ sizing issue.

I was able to adjust the die and fix all of my cases! Thanks for all of the help, I now have a comparator for all of my rifle calibers.

I'm still having issues with primers and this rifle.

I had 20 rounds loaded for the range Saturday, 3 failed to fire, no matter how many times I tried. My reloads that did shoot were very accurate and I was getting 1550-1600fps with 17.3g of IMR 4227.

It has to be the primer! But I don't know why.......

You have yet to show us pictures of the primers on loaded ammo BEFORE you try to fire the ammo. It still sounds like you are not seating your primers correctly. It has to be something you are doing if all the factory ammo you shoot fires the first time.

I have 4 centerfire leverguns and load lead bullets for call of them. I have not had one fail to fire yet.

Here are those pics Arch, not great, but might show what you need. I picked four rounds out of a 20 round batch that I was shooting out of Saturday. I numbered them 1-4. One is slightly high, shell #2 i think.
