Why are we always on the defensive?

Every time there is a mass shooting and/or terrorist attack, pro gun advocates are always defending the 2A. I would like to see Republicans put the Democrats on defense after events like this. Turn the playbook against them... Bring in victims and have them say that they wish there weren't gun free zones and that if guns were more readily available, that they could have had a way to defend themselves, etc. Just make arguments over how the current gun laws are too stringent and, had the laws been looser, people would have had a means to defend themselves. Put the liberals on the hot seat and force them to cede and back off. Make them be the bad guys.

Why are we always on the defensive?

Because the Media makes sure they cover only those events that are negative toward firearms.

And because the wealthy and powerful who want to control the world own the media, and are threatened by the only power available to regular folks - the power of violence.

Can you find victims to say that?

I'm not sure, but I find it hard to believe that there are absolutely zero pro 2A or right-leaning victims, survivors, or surviving family members from Sandy Hook, San Bernardino, or Orlando (Orlando maybe not so much).

I suspect that the few Conservative media outlets that there are are too considerate to seek out and propagandize people in the midst of a tragedy whereas the liberals don't care about anything but promoting their own agenda, hence why we have democratic congressmen interrupting a moment of silence instead of keep their pathetic mouths shut and being respectful for a minute. Unfortunately, I fear that we may have to stoop to the level of the liberal media's tactics in an act of desperation in order to put Democrats on the defensive and preserve the 2A.

There were pro-2nd amendment survivors after Columbine and Sandy Hook. I don't recall about the others. They were in the minority and the MSM doesn't exactly seek out those types. Their stories were told through other outlets.

This is a pre-packaged media campaign, designed over months and years as ready made propaganda for this exploitable place in time. All of the plays have been well scripted. You could literally feel the public conversation shift after the 40 hr point from speculation on the attacker's motivations to a laser-focus on grief-fueled call for gun control capped by the President letting *THAT* be his capstone point in his speech in Orlando on Thursday. The tacit exchange being offered is that the emotional balance of the universe can be set right *if* gun control is enacted.

The idea that we are always on the defensive is wrong. Since the sunset of the AWB - a major victory - the remaining states that weren't CCW largely became "shall issue." That was another long term major victory, too. We've gotten Supreme Court decisions affirming RKBA on the national level and others on storage in cars, parking in lots owned by the employer, etc.

It's MUCH better than it was twenty years ago - which infuriates the anti gunners who are staging these media events to maximize the political fallout. No doubt they are on the attack but it's because they have been LOSING ground and are desperately trying to make it up.

What happened after Sandy Hook? No much. It's an election year, they are braving serious fallout over the issue as it is now front and center in the political rhetoric and unlike the past few years those looking to get your votes can't sidestep it. The anti gunners were actually being held off to keep the 2A from being an issue two years ago, but now the Presidential campaign has elevated it to a major policy issue.

I've got a former Navy Seal running for office in Missouri shooting an "M4" and setting off tannerite for a campaign ad! Another female candidate is portrayed as a mom and shooting her shotgun in her ad. Best campaign ever for seeing who's a shooter - or poser - and who's dead set against guns at all. No reading up or searching the internet needed.

One thing to consider is that if it looks like we are always on the defensive with anti gunners attacking constantly - that your source of news is at fault. Stop watching the national media and 6:00 broadcast, it's been designated the official Democratic feed for decades regardless of network. "The News" is solidly leftist with no shade of conservatism or any tolerance for another point of view - so many have disengaged and don't listen any more, which has seriously challenged it's impact today. There is actually less control of the information flow because of the internet than ever, and fewer papers being published because of it too.

Just stop watching the news - even the locals are bought and paid for as one youtube video demonstrates - 16 news anchors from various stations all repeating the same talking points about the Florida shooting using the same phrases. They're simply parroting the party line. If broadcast news is the only source of information in your life, it won't give you a fair and balanced point of view. For those who won't look around on the net to find a different perspective it's a matter of not wanting to get one.

They are only on the attack with the media and in Congress, but it doesn't mean they will get any traction or that there will be major bans. The people are holding their votes hostage this year and the office seekers who were hoping to avoid this are all now thrown from the frying pan into the fire.

It's going to sort out the sheep from the goats.

OP has a point. Instead of waiting for the NRA to be accused, and then responding defensively, our public outrage that the law mandates they be defenseless should be automatic.

Yes, we are. Our opposition is patient.

Remember this old joke?

Q: How do you eat an elephant?

A: One bite at a time.

Well the left/anti's understand this. They are patient, waiting for each crisis to exploit. They learned long time ago, they can't get them all at once, so they nibble and nibble away.

End result, the elephant is eaten. That is what they want, the entire 2nd Amendment to be dead.

All you have to look at is how they work, take a bite here and there using phrases like common sense gun control, you don't need 30 rounds to kill a deer, etc.

Remember the attacks against the .50 BMG?
Remember attacks on magazine capacity?
Remember attacks on 'evil' features?
It goes on and on.......................

Why are we always on the defensive?

To be blunt, we have very few leaders with any spine whatsoever. They talk about defending our rights when campaigning but immediately cave once they are in office. It is amazing.

I do not know why our leaders are so afraid of political criticism. All they have to do is vote "no" on gun control, but they act petrified of being called names in the media. They act like they are in first grade and cry when called a name.

I feel it is getting better because we as gun owners are starting to fight back. I see it on face book, in the comment sections of news articles and many Sheriff and states are saying no to the anti gun crowed.

In fact I have noticed many articles no longer have comment sections because there where to many more pro gun comments than anti comments.

20 years ago this did not exist if we said anything we were just extremist so most just kept quit. Personally I feel this hurt us lot by giving the antis the power just because we kept quit.

I understand your frustration but it is getting better and like some have said so much of the media is anti gun so it is hard to get the word out, so our job is to state your opinion loud and proud but do it with accurate information and in a non threatening manner. (Beat them with Kindness but stand firm)

Many gun owners want to stay under the radar the so call “gray man” not me every one around me know my feelings so I am sure I am on many list, some good some bad, so I just stay legal and polite.

We are on the defensive because our opponents have nothing to lose.
combine that with the fact that we quite literally just want to be left alone and there you have it.

Gun owners are also no the ones trying to force their life choices on others.

"I don't think you need a gun, so you shouldn't have one."
vs
"hey if you don't want to own a gun, then don't."

By and large the media is owned by the left. And they only want to listen when a victim says something anti-gun. When a CCW carrier or someone is saved by a firearm, there are fewer microphones in their face.

Mass-media is run by a handful of people with clear objectives and agendas. They are in control of the politicians, too. The whole globalist system is referred to as the "beast" in the Book of Revelation, posing quite a relevant question for people in our day and age: Who can fight against the beast?

Because the left want a socialist society. A society that obeys and pays (via taxes). Most media is left wing controlled. Thats why all the talk of the U.N. troops stepping in. They tested the waters already with that at voting booths last time around.
Society has been left to feel 'needy' and that only the gov't can work things out. Kinda like the participation trophy theory.
We, as a society ,did not have this issue until we let the gov't control parenting.
Therefor we defend our rights as Americans.
See any protesters waving the American flag? No.

I would not feel happy shooting U N forces so please do not send any to try to confiscate any of my firearms.

What are "we" doing to be proactive? When children get their hands on guns and shoot themselves or other children where is the call on our side to persuade all public schools to present the NRA's Eddie Eagle Program annually? Why aren't "we" pushing for ideas like that as a proactive solution? Play their game, present a "common sense" solution and paint them into a corner for not trying something that is truly common sense? How many position neutral PSAs on gun safety has the NRA or any of the major manufacturers produced and offered to the networks to air? Where is the discussion amongst our group about suggestions like quick reaction storage containers for pistols or keeping the chamber empty inside the home? I posted a thread a couple of weeks ago mentioning an idea I had to go into a local public high school and fund a nominal scholarship, maybe $500 to $1,000 tied to an essay on the Second Amendment. Two people offered to join me if I went forward with the idea and no one commented that they would try something similar in their area.

What I do see are a lot of posts saying things like "I'd hate to shoot the UN Troops" or "Come Take It". Willows bend, oak trees break, you catch a lot more flies with honey than you do vinegar.

That's my two cents. Now sit back and watch as I get flamed.

The lead singer of The Eagles of Death Metal expressed that very sentiment and was subsequently pilloried by the media. The guy urvived a horrific night but was beaten up in the press just for expressing an opinion that didn't mesh with the leftist worldview.
I guess I'm not seeing where he was "beaten up". I see a generally liberal magazine publishing his opinion that gun control failed.

And there are a whole lot more Democrats in this country than Republicans. For Hillary to win the White House she has hundreds of paths to win whereas the Republican candidate only has a couple dozen. With California, New York and New Jersey and few other populated states that always go Democratic she has almost 270 electoral votes already.

He got mocked after that Rolling Stone article. And a couple of concert venues cancelled shows, with owners claiming that they were offended by his remarks. My GoogleFu is failing me at the moment but I remember reading several such articles to the subject.
