DBM vs. Hinged floorplate

Hello,

So in the next year or two I am most likely going to be building a bolt action "utility rifle" that would be used for hunting, target shooting (no PRS games though, I'll get a dedicated PRS rifle if I purser that), and as a "one rifle" concept.

I've got a good idea of what I want, <12.5 pounds, < 40", .308, 18" light palma barrel, mid range powered optic (2-10ish). MCM HTG/A1-3 or a MCS T/EH5. I can give full specs if need be later.

My question for now though, boils down to whether I see any real advantage of a DBM vs. an internal magazine. Honestly if a Mausingfield, and perhaps an AIAT was able to use and internal mag, then this post wouldn't have existed. However, they only use DBMs, while the FN Winchester 70 can use both.

So basically, I am trying to figure out whether adding the extra weight, cost, handling characteristics, the possibility of loosing magazines, and bulk are worth the hassle over a regular hinged floorplate.

Obviously I am used to them on my AR and G26, but due to the intended use of this rifle and its very utilitarian role (remember no PRS games), I am having a hard time seeing the advantage of a DBM.

Like I said, if it wasn't for a DBM only Mausingfield, I wouldn't have a question because I think it the QC barrels are extremely nice compared to having to have a gunsmith change a barrel.

Anyways, I appreciate ya'll's time, have a great day.

For your intended purpose, hinged, but I like DBM as well. If you are dead set on a Mausingfield action, then the decision is made, which I would not see as a handicap. Using a Savage action would give you options and you can now do same QC barrels on Rem 700 style actions. Just google remage barrels, no idea if anyone is adapting it to Win 70 action.

Buy the rifle you want and don't worry a lot either way. I have floorplates, DBM and blind magazines. On a hunting or target rifle it just doesn't matter much to me.

Well my mind is not entirely made up on the Mausingfield or the Win. 70, its just that I am not looking at other actions (Remington, Remington clones, Savages, etc.) as they simply, IMO, do not compare at all to a more robust CRF, fixed ejecting action.

Keep up the replies, its good reading!

I like DBM flush. Like rem 700 factory dbm or kwik klip. What i really hate but still own myself is dbm like aics sticking out under.

if you're going custom, look at the Impact action.

i'll never own a blind mag rifle again. magazines aren't just useful for games. they're useful for loading and unloading quickly. they're a good way to carry the ammo you need.

I find that when I walk afield with a rifle, I tend to carry the rifle in the hand at the balance point more than any other form of carry. A protruding box magazine doesn't make that easy, and so I prefer either hinged floorplates or the ability to run flush fitting magazines.

taliv, those are nice actions, but they're push feed 700 clones, not exactly what I'm looking for. I am a huge fan of CRF, mechanical ejectors, and 3-position safties.

I've owned both and both are fine. I have a slight preference to hinged floorplate because there's nothing to lose and nothing sticking out. However, the DBM would be more convenient if frequently loading/unloading.

Anyway, I would choose the action you want regardless of the choice between these two magazine types, and just work with DBM if that's your only option with the action you want.
