There is a 1907 Winchester on gunbroker that I saw today with a barrel marked - Stainless Steel -. Serial number 6582 which would put it as a first or second year gun. I suspect it is not the original barrel, but this is the first one I have ever seen with a stainless barrel.

Sure it is marked "Stainless Steel" and not "Nickel Steel"? The latter marking was standard after about #7100 (late 1907).

Yes, clearly marked stainless. This is the only one I have ever seen as most were nickel steel. You can see it on gb Item no. 574131035.

Your auction number doesn't work.

Here is a link to the actual auction, and it looks orginial, and it does say Stainless Steel on it.

It has to be a later gun, or at least a later barrel, as I didn't think Winchester ever used stainless barrels until they brought out the .220 Swift in 1935.

But they didn't even use stainless barrels on them until several years later.

The auction number works now (I deleted an extra 1). I am guessing that in the early years ammo was corrosive as I have seen more than one .351 with a replacement barrel. I remember reading about the .220 Swift and how hard it was on barrels, and I remember Winchester going to a stainless barrel, but never in my wildest dreams did I think they used it in the 07. Thanks for your response.

Around #7100, Winchester started to mark their 07 barrels "Nickel Steel" but I believe they used the "Stainless Steel" marking much later, possibly post-WWII. If that is the case, the barrel is certainly a replacement, not odd since those guns were made up to 1957 and parts replacement (including barrels) was common.

Stainless steel can be blued. One way, which Winchester did use, is to iron plate it then blue the iron.

351 winchester stainless steel barrel

Read about your rifle ! I purchased a 1894 ( short rifle ) in a 25/35 at a gun show here in Wisc , bought it as a eastern carbine , but found out from a old Winchester guru , it's forearm measured 8 3/8 " several other things it had going for it qualified it to be called a short rifle , any way it to has a barrel marketed stainless steel ! He says was rebarreled at the factory ! Had the proof marks , researched it on line found out Winchester made like 60k of these but never were hot sellers ! So they dropped the price and unloaded them like mine is circa 1905 . So there are a few out there . Hope it helps and it is a real shooter !
The man didn't know what he was selling and I didn't know what I was buying ! Once again , a room full of opinions and I love it ! Have fun with your rifle !
