I shoot Mossberg 500/590a1 pump shotguns exclusively. I've been thinking of getting a few more Mossberg 500s to keep permanently in the trunk of my cars. Recently I noticed you can now get a 20" barreled 7+1 capacity Mossberg 500. I know you loose the ability to interchange barrels and fully loaded it will be heavier. Since these are dedicated as solely emergency and travel firearms, I don't mind those limitations.

Is there anything else you can think of where there is a down side to this configuration? I already have other Mossberbgs for clays, hunting and home defense. Many thanks.

A Maverick 88 would be ideal, or a used 500. I personally would not want to leave a new shotgun in my car. The 7+1 M500s are cool. Don't get an 8+1 590A1 unless you like really front heavy guns.

I would just buy whatever used 500 I could find cheap and throw it in there.

Yep, what he^ said. I saw a very clean pistol-gripped 500 on my local Armslist the other day for $250, and the one I keep loaded in the closet only cost me $225. I'd shop used, and go with almost any 500 or Maverick 88 that pops up cheap.

Might be an option in a free state, but you would have to think of the legalities and practicality of how it would be loaded. Also, how would you secure it from theft?

In PRK you cannot legally have squat in your car.

Good call, staying with a familiar design across the board. Can't think of a downside to the 7+1 since you aren't expecting the barrels to interchange. Haven't owned that configuration myself, just the 5+1, but a friend has the 7+1 and it works great.

Thanks all for the feedback. I've been keeping my eye out for used Mossberg 500s for good prices locally for quite some time. They rarely fall below $300 and for that I can buy one at the big box store new. If I could find a good price on a used 500 Mossberg I would go that way.

Bicycle cable through the open action looped around the trunk hinge. It has to be unloaded. I also live in CA. Locked in trunk and then locked again is more than is what required by law. It isn't for rapid deployment. Think of it as part of an expanded disaster kit which I already do keep in my trunk. Plus, when I travel, I already bring a pistol. I just want something more substantial available just in case.

Bud's Gun Shop has Maverick 88s with an 18 1/2" barrel for $195. Added a buttstock shell sleeve and a Limbsaver recoil boot to my Maverick 88 and I'm good to go.

Talking off the top of my head here, I don't know the intricacies of your transport laws out there.

I just did a quick search for a magnetic locking system and didn't find one, but did see a pretty interesting system from http://products.esmet.com/viewitems/vehicle-racks/vehicle-rack-components

Its either a standard cuff or tubular key, or a digital with 10 second delay. The shotty is locked into the mounts that are bolted into the vehicle.

Velcro pad on the shotty to accept a side saddle with shells that are kept in the glove box. Grab the shells, hit the trunk and good to go in probably less than 30 seconds. If Cali is more stringent on ammo transport, maybe a Bulldog car box covers you, IDK.

Here the weapon and shells stored separately in a car makes it gtg. The locking system makes a smash and grab a non issue. I would consider also how many times has a trunk been randomly popped open in my area and stuff stolen. Again here there is a pretty low chance of that happening.

The suggestions for the cheapest 500 you can get your hands on is good. A trunk gun is going to live a hard life so I wouldn't put money into it.

It doesn't necessarilly have to "live a hard life". A $10 soft-case from walmart will go a long way towards keeping it from getting scratched, dinged and dented.
Also, spray it down with something that doesn't just run off, like Dupont multi-use teflon spray, and check it every month or so more any corrosion, and give it a quick wipedown and fresh shot of lube. It ain't real hard. ;)

MilDot,
I got you and agree. There needs to be general care taken of it.

The hard life I am talking about is that it is not going to be factory fresh like a safe queen or range toy. There will be signs of wear in the finish bumps and bruises. Some people have issues with that. Personally I wouldn't use my Benelli M4 as a trunk gun, my Mossy 500 tactical I wouldn't hesitate if my AO deemed the need of one.

I carry a Glock everyday at work even though I despise the gun. It's cheap and lives a hard life in a chemical rich environment. I carry it because I don't want to trash one of my Sigs I carry the rest of the time.

Different tools for different jobs.

Just FYI

Turners has the 500, 7+1, 20" pistol gripped 'Persuader' on sale for $320 ($30 off). If you have any extra stocks laying around or wanted to change it anyways, this might be a good deal for you.

Also, if you're flexible on 5+1 500's .................

Turners has a 500, 5+1, 18.5" that has the normal stock and an extra pistol grip for $320 ($50 off).

Big5 has the 500 Combo 5+1 and comes with 18.5" security barrel and 28" vent-rib field barrel for $300 ($50 off)

As someone who enjoys short barrel shotguns and has kept a firearm in the trunk of the car I don't see any problems provided it is legal in your State.

The blue steel is not very durable and rust resistant. I would have the gun Ceracoated (or hard chromed if I was really flush with money). For extra ammo I would buy a nylon shotshell belt, fill it with ammo and keep in the trunk with the gun.

A gun case is a must. I would look at a black nylon type as they are rugged and easy to keep clean.

Yeah,no worries, we're on the same page, I wasn't calling you out or anything :D. I was just trying to articulate that "trunk gun" doesn't necessarilly have to be a total "beater" gun, given a modicum of care.

i been having a 500 in my trunk for years. i spray it down with ballistol every few months. the shotgun stays in a folded wool blanket for quick access. never ever had a problem with the gun or seen any rust on it anywhere. wool supposed to wick away moisture or is ballistol the key?

found a used 500 for $100 and put a 7 round mag/20" barrel combo from brownells for $100. i bought two.

http://www.brownells.com/shotgun-pa...shotgun-kit-w-front-bead-sight-prod74622.aspx

i keep ammo in a ziplock bag in an ammo can. the ammo in and on the shotgun, never had a problem. i test them now and then. i use federal low recoil 00 buck with flite control and can keep all pellets on a poster board at 50 yards. still i worry about those pellets in public. im thinking of the winchester slugs that break in 3 chunks and penetrate 15".

i always figured buckshot would be best for taking headshots on a bad guy wearing armor. but i guess a slug to the lower belly/hip would stop the threat just as good?

Thanks bullseyebob. I have a 500 trap barrel that has to be about 30 years old that I have never oiled and serves as a good surrogate for what my shotgun would be like if I completel ignored it. At most is has a little type patch of light rust the size of a dime. I will maintain it but based on where I live it isn't a major concern.
