I just picked up an Aero Precision midlength rifle from Brownell's at a really nice price. I swapped out the M4 stock for an A1-length fixed stock from Fulton Armory (made by Cav Arms, I'm pretty sure), and I added a Spike's carry-handle rear sight. I think it gives the gun an old-school rifle look while still being a handy carbine. I'll have to get to the range soon, but visually I'm impressed with the Aero Precision's quality level. Other than the barrel being nitrided instead of chromed, it appears to be similar in quality to my Colt 6920.

The only gripe I have about the Aero Precision is that it did not come with a front sling swivel. It's just a $4 part that most buyers will want, so why omit it, especially when proper installation requires a rivet instead of a simple screw or pin? Lacking the proper tool, I found that installing the rivet wasn't the easiest of jobs, and my results weren't the prettiest, but I did get it adequately done.

That turned out nice. I am a big fan of the "minimalist" AR.

The only thing I would add to that rifle is a light.

Just my .02,

Leon, Your choice of an Aero Precision is most fortunate for you, the weapons are of excellent quality being made by a company that has produced parts for the aero space industry for years. Aero barrels are top quality made by Ballistic Advantage (an Aero company) and receivers are mil spec and better in that the Gen II has a nylon tipped tension screw to take up space (if any) between the upper and lower and they thread the hole for the take down pin spring and detent so they can be held in by a set screw.
I have at least a dozen of my AR's made from Aero components and great rifles they are. I shoot a lot of ammo each month and the Aero carbines eat it without any objection. Your build should satisfy you long enough to save for your next AR purchase. :)

Just a question for you - how is the LOP on that A1 stock? About what notch on a 6-position M4 stock would give you the same length? I'm a fan of fixed stocks, and I've thought about getting one of those Fulton Arms stocks for the the carbine I have or maybe for a future build.

Come to think of it, the build I have in mind is almost identical to what you have - mid length gas, fixed stock, iron sights, lightweight barrel. I like what you've done. :)

Mosin, The Magpul fixed Carbine stock with the added enhanced recoil pad makes a real nice and light set up. I have one on one of my 15-22's and like the different feel, length of pull is 12.5" where a AR with stock fully extended is about 14".

One position forward on a 6 position M4 approximately equals an A1 stock.

Here's a before and after comparison with my AR a while back. A1 stock vs. M4 at full extension. "After" is the top photo.

That's perfect, thank you. I normally shoot with my stock on the fourth notch, so an A1 fixed stock just might work.
