Picked up a Springfield Range Officer on Sunday. Considering it weighs one ounce less than my TRP, I think it'll be a sweet shooter. The fit and finish seems like it's really good, it's right on par with my TRP, the trigger feels a little heavier though. My only complaint is that there isn't an ambi safety since I'm a lefty, but that can be fixed.

Does anyone have any experience with them? What mags do they like?

I've had 3 Springfield 1911's for a couple of years, the Range Officer Compact, Lightweight Loaded Operator and Milspec Stainless. The Range Officer and Milspec have been perfect out of the box. When I picked up the Loaded, the owner of the LGS I picked it up at told me it was tight and would need a couple of hundred rounds to be put through it before it would be reliable. He was right, and it's had no malfunctions after that break in period. All of them are keepers.

In regards to magazines, I've used Springfield's as well as Mecgar and Chip McCormick 8 round magazines. All have worked great. I've tried Mecgar, Chip McCormick and Wilson Combat 10 rounders. The Wilson Combat magazines have worked well, but the other 2 have been inconsistent.

My pair of Springfield Loaded 1911s will use any mags fine. I've used the originals, Kimbers, USGI, and Wilson ETMs. The ETM is by far the best. They hold 8, but seat as easily as a 7. The Kimber 8 round mags are uncomfortable to insert when full.

Agreed. I've had good luck with Chip mags with my .45, curious if the usual names like Chip, Wilson, etc are all considered good for the 9mm 1911 as well

My apologies. The guns I was referring to are 45's. I didn't notice it was a 9mm. I don't have a 9mm 1911 (yet), but have heard good things about Wilson mags for them.

Is the TRP worth 1400?. I am looking right now, but want the impossible Full sized rail, which is running 1700, form 1300 a few months ago?

I wouldn't pay $1400 for it. I was able to get it on GunBroker for quite a bit less new in box. So make sure to shop around. I am very happy with it and feel I got a good deal on it at around $1200. My only complaint is that it doesn't seem to like LSWC profile bullets so far. Other than that, fit and finish are great, and it shoots very well too. I feel like it's a great pistol

With the way prices have went up over the last couple of years I think the TRP is a very solid 1911 at $1400. That being said you have to ask yourself if spending a little more for a Baer or DW Valor is doable because I think they are both a step up.

I didn't like my TRP and sold it unfired a few years after I bought it for $1300 . I paid $1350 for it with shipping and FFL . I might take a look at the Range Officer . I didn't like the sharp LPI front strap and since I am right handed I didn't like the ambi safety . Nice comparison from someone that has both . Let us know how it shoots compared to the TRP .

I put 350 rounds through it this weekend, and it shoots like a dream. Only failures were weak ammo induced, and that was because I was seeing how low I could go on my reloads. I'm still working on a 124gr load that will work well. 124gr lead over 3.3 and 3.4gr of 700-X worked fine, but I want to see if I can get anything lower to function well. The slide wouldn't lock back on empty mag and had some failure to feed/eject with weaker loads. I hoped that I could use the same bunny fart load that works well in my Glock 19, but don't think it's gonna happen. It ran 115gr lead over 3.5gr 700-X like a champ though. Sights needed minimal adjustment out of the box. Compared to the TRP, it shoots very soft, but considering the caliber difference, that's to be expected. I do prefer the smooth front strap compared to the checkered one of the TRP. The only upgrade it needs is a safety that a lefty can use properly. Other than that, it's awesome.
