hello all,
ok so many of you might already know that for some reason I am a cheap bugger that likes to buy cheap handguns, and usually whine about the results afterwards. so I'm looking for input on the next one. so far I have purchased the Canik TP9(first gen), and TP9SF, the Ruger 9E, and the Arcus 98DA. I am looking for a fresh design, 9mm for less than $400(brand new only, I am not looking for used so please don't tell me to look for a police trade in glock). hammer or striker, metal or poly frame, makes no difference to me. I would prefer service sized handguns with at least a 4 inch slide. gun's I've considered and decided against include the S&W sigma lines, FMK 9C1, EAA Witness and SAR, and pretty much all taurus's, Hi Points, and Keltecs. I have considered the Stoeger Cougar, and it is still very much on my radar.

so, go ahead and make me buy more junk I don't need.

Century Arms Zastavas for $219.00 + $10.00 S&H

But I don't think they're better than SARs or S&W budget gun

How about a Grand Power? I was looking at one recently, new for $399 if memory serves. It's similar to the Stoeger, rotating barrel and had a great trigger.

Instead of Canik's okay copy of a P99, how about the Walther framed MR9? I've seen new ones sell for $315 on GB.

The Arcus 98DA is a fairly old design, and a spin off of a BHP.

The Cougar at $300 is pretty darn nice.

DB9SF? A bit of a question mark, but it's $250. Canik Shark?

I've used the MR9, horrible trigger, couldn't hit the broad side of a barn from inside the barn.

a lot of these are good though, keep em coming.

IMO the Stoeger Cougar is an inexpensive gun but not a cheap gun. It is a very nice gun for a little bit of money. You are right to have it near the top if your list.

There was likely junk in the mechanism or something else wrong. The MR9/P99 has one of the best DA/SA trigger systems.

SIG SP2022 - duty size, polymer frame, DA/SA with decocker. On sale for $399.95 at Top Gun Supply (just barely made it <$400).

Some good suggestions, like the Stoeger Cougar and the SIG P2022, at that price point. Might want to also consider the Tristar T120 and the RIA 1911 Standard FS 9mm.

Walther PPS is a veRy good gun for less than $400 new. Smith and Wesson snubbing go for $330s.

Edit....forgot you wanted a service sized gun, but I'll leave these here. That PPS will fire better than most junk full-sized.

I can vouch for the Taurus PT111 G2 as a less expensive 9mm. I think I saw an add the other day going for 220.00.
I have put a few hundred rounds through mine and not a single problem.

Ho ho - I missed the part about different designs.

The CCP from Umarex Walther uses a gas-delay system like H&K's iconic P7.

The R51 from Remington uses Pedersen's hesitation lock.

Its a single stack, but I was really impressed with the Kahr CT9 I got to play with. It was $319 at a gun show, holds 10 rounds, has a super smooth DA trigger, and something about the grip just locks into your hand. I could beat up on an 8 inch plate at 15 yards right off the bat. It has pretty close to a full length grip and service length barrel, its just a thin single stack frame.

There are quite a few inexpensive 1911's out there. My stepbrother has an RIA, I have a Tisas, and my FiL has a Metro Arms. All of them have been completely reliable base model 1911's that cost $350 - $400 NIB.

Just go to slickguns and scroll down till you find something you like, there are hundreds of guns in the catagory you mentioned, it's like throwing mud against the wall at this point, just pick one, maybe the new shield in 45.

I would love a more affordable P7 on the market.

Such a great pistol. After fiddling with it for about a minute, it's a very intuitive interface with a great trigger and outstanding accuracy for any size pistol out of a compact frame.
