I have this small storage area available that I want to fill up as a gift for a friend. What do you put in this area that you find useful? There is a whole list of things I can think of, but with the limited volume available, what have you found to be most useful?

If you (or the friend) use battery powered optics, Hogue, Magpul and probably others make plugs to hold batteries. I've also seen basic cleaning kits and a plug designed to hold a replacement firing pin. And there's a simple plug that would let you use your imagination.

I use iron sights on my AR so for me the cleaning kit is most useful, but if I used battery powered optics, I'd really appreciate the ability to have spares on my rifle at all times..

I keep a small basic front sight tool in my pistol grip, but batteries would be in there too if I didn't have waterproof battery storage in my stock (Vltor).

Depending on what grip you actually have, I could see something like an insert with armorer tools, or a new bolt/firing pin (just the bolt itself and the pin, not the carrier/BCG). I also know several guys who use that space to hold a copy of their NFA paperwork for the gun, but that's not exactly something you can gift to a friend.

I just keep ear plugs in mine. Need to put some batteries in it though.

But you could put spare batteries, a bolt, lube, bore snake, a few spare rounds of 5.56, sight tool, tea packets (if it's a rifle he'll carry a lot and want something hot on a cold day) etc..

Magpul makes a grip insert that can hold a bolt, firing pin, cam pin, and retainer pin that fits their grip.

As a gift for a female, I'd have to go with the obvious. Roll up about ten 100 dollar bills and shove them in.

Nothing is more useful either.

Like the guy at gym that asked which machine impressed the ladies the most, that'd be the ATM.

Any friend of mine could fill that space with a roll of hundred dollar bills and I'd be a happy clam!

I say just pick a couple simple items that would go well with the rifle, like an allen wrench or screwdriver sized to fit scope mounts or such.

Why?

Because most people don't think about grip storage and this would spark his own interest in the subject.

i keep spare parts in mine ,firing pin ,firing pin retaining pin ,extracter ,and extracter pin ,extracter spring , and i think bolt cam, iremember in army feild stipping to clean some guys lost there parts ,if they did it in arms room i got extra spares...made sure i was last to clean rifle .only at permanent duty station.( you dont want to be last in boot camp)

I keep a pair of soft foam earplugs in the grip of my AR rifles.
If you actually shoot your rifle these will be the handiest most useful things you can carry
