Hello! I have another thread about this shotgun, but figured I should start a new one for this. The other thread can be found here

I took the gun out and shot one round of skeet with it, and it fired just fine, have a video I'll post if I can. The only trouble is with the magazine tube. I went to put a round in there and the shell just pops right out. The spring obviously has good tension, but it seems like that whatever holds the shells in the tube is broken or missing, I just don't know what to look for.

Any suggestions?

You need to take the cartridge cutoff out and bend the little "lip" that keeps the cartridges inside the magazine tube. Bend it just a bit and it should keep the shells in. I did this to my 1955 Model 12 when it was doublefeeding cartridges and it cured that to.

Do a google search for Winchester model 12 cutaway. Midway has several videos of a cutaway model 12 that show the operation.

Nuline guns has, I believe, a fairly comprehensive discussion of setting headspace and adjusting the barrel ring. If I recall correctly the chamber ring sets headspace and is not adjustable. it takes special reamers to fit a chamber ring. The barrel extension ring can be adjusted to tighten up a loose fitting bbl.

What does any of that have to do with the OPs question?

I guess, being an engineer, I like to know how things work. It helps immensely in understanding how to sort out a problem. Sorry if I offended you.

When you load a shell into the magazine of a model 12 it does not latch in. When you insert the next shell the first one tries to come back out, that is normal. The shell actually comes back against the lifter and is held there. When you work the action slide the first shell is loaded into the chamber and the next one is held by the shell stop until the action is closed then it comes back against the lifter. This is sometimes thought to be a problem with those who are not familiar with a Winchester model 12. Try it, I think your gun is working properly.

You are completely correct! I've never used a shotgun like that and automatically assumed something was wrong. Thank you very much for this information!

Interesting. never knew this about the model 12. Learn something new every day. Now I have to have one.
Good job Lafitte.
