I read in Shooting Sports USA that the High Power matches and other national matches are being moved out of Camp Perry. After 107 years as the the premier place for shooters, suddenly a change supposedly noted as an upgrade. I am sure many shooters will not be happy as well as the vendors who looked forward to a boost in their income by the use of vendor row. One wonders what political pressure or perhaps environmental pressure was apart of this sudden move. I am sure they did not ask the competitors what they wished.

For now it is just the High Power matches, that is if the move is approved in January.

Going to a better facility, why not? They say it will be better for the competitors.

What makes you think that vendor row will not move with it? The vendors that specialize in that discipline should follow the shooters. Those that cater to the other events, will probably stay. I can see vendor row being smaller due to some leaving for the other site. But I also see both sites probably having vendor areas.

I think the decision to have some events at the same time instead of splitting them up by a week or so is not a good idea.

NRA squirreling things up yet again. Over 100 years at one spot. Final decision is to be decided by the bored meeting in January and that's not a misstype

added: ''I am sure they did not ask the competitors what they wished.'' Oh I can gaurantee that!! I HEARD NO BUZZ up there at the Nationals

I know I'd like to hear more details about the rationale and why they didn't ask for input from shooters. Rather authoritarian if you ask me and I think I've heard the NRA rail against authoritarian rule from DC on more than a few occasions. Guess when the NRA leadership does it, "it's done for the betterment of the sport. Trust us."

I have read on several forums that safety was one of the issues...boats on the lake.

For the short time the matches take place, the shore of the lake could be posted as a "no-go" zone. Local, State and Federal law enforcement agences restrict coastline all the time, so keeping boaters away from the backdrop of Camp Perry rounds would not be unprecedented.

Well, I used to be one of the "jackbooted thugs" (i.e. Federal Law Enforcement Agents) that the NRA railed against during the time it thought engaging in a rhetorical "war" against the government was fashionable. At the time of that ll-considered solicitation, I responded by joining former President Bush in resigning my NRA membership. Yes, in my opinion, the NRA is authoritarian in its behavior and fascist in its outlook and so has lost all legitimacy.

Few have fought with the NRA more than I have. They make some bad mistakes yet they do a tremendous amount of good. The fact we still have a viable 2nd Amendment is due to the fear factor that they have put on the Congress. The other thing that they do well at is help with bringing in junior shooters. Our club has been given thousands of dollars to equip our junior shooting program with top notch rifles and gear. As a small club we could not have done that ourselves. I get tired to listening to the people who bash the NRA, they are ignorant and have no clue as to the good the NRA does. Sure the NRA screws up and do dumb things, but who doesn't?I have written and received replies from EVP LaPierre about their mistakes, but I had the moxie to confront them with with it instead of bad mouthing them, That is the gentlemens way of doing things.

That safe guard is and always has been in effect for the matches and other test firing that is done near by. This area is marked and noted on navigational charts and well understood by locals. The problem is people that ignore the rules, some do not realize where they are and the ones that do not bother to learn the rules on where not to go. It is frustrating when a cease fire is called due to a boat or jet ski wonders into the impact zone during a match. Area is patrolled so the area is cleared fairly quickly most of the time.

yes and the BATF just sits around knitting sweaters not attacking people military style

Actually the Camp Perry no-go zone is clearly marked by buoys and is patrolled by the Ohio Naval Militia. FYI ONM is codified in Ohio law and based at Camp Perry, not a rag-tag or private sector group.

I have shot at Camp Perry since 1997, both rifle and pistol nationals. It has gotten progressively worse over the years, the facility is substandard on its best day. The pistol targets were old when the Army gave them up in the late 1960's and the NRA spends almost nothing improving them. Unless you are a superstar, you shoot in a mud puddle, with one foot in a sprinkler valve box or on a wobbly bench that is a foot lower than it should be. Starting a couple of years ago, they lock every building and refuse to let you use any restroom on the base. The NRA won't let you in the NRA building. Everything is outside in the rain or you can look at it online if you can get internet.

If you kill it and have a Brian Zins moment, you win $10 bucks. The NRA spends a $100K or more on prizes for the Bianchi Cup and hundreds of dollars on prizes for the rifle and pistol nationals. It is all but impossible to win your class and win your entry fees back at Camp Perry. I've shot there a dozen times over the last two decades and enjoy the trip for the competition and the history of the place. I'll go again just to see my friends, but I have learned to expect horrible weather, a sorry shooting position at a creaking target that may just fail completely during the match. My goal is to shoot my best under austere conditions.

Nothing from the last three visits has made me think the NRA cares in the least about this match. I'm sure with anti-gun Obama running the place the guard is getting more anti-gun every year. One last complaint, they allow the Ohio State patrol onto the base to cruise the parking lots and record the license plates of competitors. I've been sitting on my tailgate eating lunch and seen this first hand. It is seedy and Orwellian. It creeps me out and the NRA does nothing to stop it.

nothing ever seems to get better. I always laugh when I hear cops are pro 2nd amendment

I understand it is due to cost. I cannot verify these numbers but a fellow shooter said the NRA was paying $16,000 a day to use Camp Perry.

As a Competitor I can say costs for staying in the Port Clinton area, or on base, are extortionary. You will be charged $25.00 a night to pitch a tent in the recreational area. A bunk in an un air conditioned barracks was a positive bargain at $15.00 a night, you brought your own sheets and pillows, towels, and fan!. Last I checked un air conditioned huts, no water, were $40.00 a night. Leaky, moldy huts have been the norm. My lawn mower shed is dryer than a Camp Perry Hut. Base housing was around $90 dollars a night, I did not stay in the "Motel".

Port Clinton is a resort area and housing prices reflect resort rates. You can expect to pay several thousand dollars if you stay two weeks in one of the in town motels/hotels. Rates almost double for Friday night and Saturday night during the summer. For the guys shooting in the CMP Garand and Springfield matches, they hang around, dress up in period costumes, and are gone in a couple of days. Serious shooters will compete for a week or two and housing is a very real burden for those not blessed with riches.

I did not find Port Clinton or Camp Perry housing to be a good value .

This year I shot in the Small Bore Prone Nationals in Bristol IN. My housing cost me $45.00 a night, tax included, the Motel was old, but the room was big, I had a bathroom with running water, a little refrigerator and microwave. More upscale lodging run $65.00 a night with a breakfast bar.

Where are they moving to?

One might hope for the new CMP range in Anniston Alabama -- appears to be a state of the art facility.

I for one know that the NRA is the one who helped elect a Pro 2nd Amendment President, why jump to conclusions about a move. Perhaps a move to a more gun friendly (area) state such as New Mexico, in Raton, might not be such a bad move, that would be my guess.

Guess a link to the article should have been included to make it easier for some to find out what is going on.

Ha, glad to see that everyone enjoys Camp Perry as much as I do! As painful as it sometimes seems, I keep going back. To be truthful, I only shot the NRA hipower once and decided never to do it again. It kind of reminded me of boot camp, so the other inconveniences seemed minor. I think that they have numbed it down a little since then, and there are far less shooters than in days of yore.

I'm a little surprised that the pistol matches will be held concurrently. I'm sure there are individuals who enjoy doing both. BTW I've heard recently that the pistol matches were to be moved to another facility near Columbus Ohio. I don't know if those plans have changed or that's another bombshell for next year.
