I'm new to 50 BMG & still in the process of setting up. I have all my tools that I know I need ether at the house or in the mail with the exception of a primer pocket uniformer that I plan to make myself.

I had a box of factory ammo that is Hornady. I've shot 4 of them so I have 4 pieces of brass so far with the rest ordered & hopefully in the mail. I already have primers & powder (WC872) should be here today. APIT are ordered & scheduled for tomorrow.

I went with Lee tooling. I bought another Classic Cast, Lee FL & seater die, shell holder for the press, large trimming shell holder, large cutter, & mandrel.

I don't have a specific question at the moment but I'd like for those that have loaded for this cartridge to offer any tips & tricks you have. Pictures of your setup are welcome. I'd love to see what your doing.

I'm thinking about measuring powder for this caliber by scoop & trickling up on the scale/dispenser.

Reloading is like reloading smaller rifle calibers except requiring more effort. Use a good case lube such as Imperial Sizing Wax or Dillon Case Lube. Use a nylon brush to lube inside the neck, very important. Requires lots of "pull" to pull the expander ball back through the neck. Always do the inside check for signs of case stretching to avoid a case separation. APIT's can start fires in dry grass and leaves. WC 872 usually recommended to start at around 205 grains and work up. Work up in 3-5 grain increments and once you have a load, you can play with smaller increments up or down to test for better accuracy. Once fired military will require removing the primer pocket crimp. I cut the crimp rather than swaging. Present CCI 50 BMG primers with the dome cup, I talked with CCI when they first were introduced. They recommended to me to use the flat primer punch and lightly flatten the dome. Some primer punches are concave to match the dome of primers. Make sure primers are seated flush or below. Some military brass I've bought have shallow pockets and a primer pocket uniformer is a must to make sure primers are seated deep enough. I wouldn't start without a primer pocket uniformer. I use a K&M uniformer in a cordless drill-driver. I dip powder and trickle up. Have fun.

x2 on Imperial Sizing Wax. I also use the Lee Classic Cast, and have no problem resizing the cases with imperial. I use the Lyman 50 BMG Multi Tool for cleaning/reaming the primer pocket and deburring.

I sized the 4 cases I have last night. I'd read to use motor oil. It does work but was very hard sizing. So the second case I tried STP™ which made them almost as easy as 223. Trimming went easy as expected. I cut the crimp out very carefully with a end mill since I haven't made my uniforming tool yet. I got a chip of brass in the cup & uglied up the primer.

Powder comes today but still no bullets.

Thanks for the replies so far.

Well I finally got my APTI bullets. They were delayed by the shoot show. I was so excited until I opened the box & seen how bad they was. Luckily it sound like the company is going to accept them back & shipping is going to be picked up by them. I'm not going to use their name at this time but I'll add some pictures of what I found.

I was so looking forward to getting to shoot this weekend but I guess that is off for now. I have to find another supplier since they said everything they had came from the same place.

Have the same set up, same powder, same lack of proper directions that Lee seemed to forget. Yes I use 205 grains all the time as my 50 performs just fine with it. Had most of my problems with the primer pocket swager and GI brass. Check my pictures.

When you waste 45 cents worth of primer each time, you'll go buy the K&M pocket uniformer. Chuck it up in the drill and ream the heck out of the brass!

I didn't really get any directions but I didn't buy the kit ether. They seem to load the same way all my other calibers except a little easier.

If you aren't set on APIT, check out ammunitionstore.com- they sell both API and tracer projectiles in bulk. I bought the can of tracers and am happy with quality- not sure about the API. My order was processed quickly and the price is reasonable.

I also use the Lee bullet sizer die to resize pulled bullets. Works very well, especially if you use Imperial wax. There seems to be some disagreement in the community as to whether this is necessary, but the die is not expensive and it doesn't take very long to run the bullets through it.

Those bullets are some I was considering but I found the one I bought much cheaper is why I went with them.

I'm using the Lee sizing die. I'm getting .510" bullets out of it & they seem more round then any other jacketed bullet I've ever had to resize.

I have been using STP since I had it in hand & it works great.

I'm getting ready to upload some pics from the bullets I was sorting.

I ended up keeping about 525 it off the 4K I'd ordered. About 150 were out of round but looks like what I'd expect from pulled bullets the rest I keep are junk but I'll fling them for fun anyhow. Seems like I get 2 out of 3 to fly really well but the 3rd takes a new flight path. Lol

For your enjoyment.

These are my favorite.

These are a few of the worse. Out of the 4K I will keep about 500 of the ones not quite as bad so I'll have something to do while I order more from somewhere else.

Save the cores, they can be useful for other non shooting things. Be very careful since these are APIT and the mix could light off. I hope you have a safe place to shoot these.

4K huh. Hey, go big or go home, right? Lets see, how many pounds of powder to send 4K downrange? :)

Like what?

Yelp. It's really wet here & they will have a rather large hill to stop them down in the hallow. There is no one around.

About 132 lbs or 16.5 jugs.

Things tend to be cheaper in bulk & I plan on getting some enjoyment from this rifle.

We used to take ones form .30 cal and insert them in the feet of a rest for concrete benches. They will not deform like the steel ones it came with. Stayed sharp and gripped the bench well. .50 Cal ones would be too big for that, but surely you can come up with a good use for a pointed piece of metal that won't deform.

Here are pictures of the tracers from the ammunition store and some pulled FMJs that I got from Massammo. They are typical of what was sent in each order (I checked the Massammo site, and the FMJs are currently out of stock)

Unfortunately, I live in upstate New York, so I won't be able to try them until spring when the ground thaws.

Those look really good. What I bought was about a third the price but out of 4K I only picked out 500 & they look like junk compared to those. That was a bunch of work to go through that many also with little return.

The brass for this grows crazy fast. I was cutting over .03" off these.

I'm going to have to look into a new trim tool. I like the Lee trim pilot for other brass but the one I ordered isn't working for me. I ended up using my hole debuting tool to shave the necks down the squaring them off with the Lee cutter. I really need a better option that doesn't break the bank.

I use the Lee trimmer- I chuck the shell holder in my cordless drill and use it to spin the case. I can trim 50 or so before my hands get too tired.

That was the same way I was trimming. I wanted to chuck the trimmer up but it's bigger then my 1/2" chuck. I'm going to have to modify it. I think I'll drill & tap the end so I can screw a shaft in it or attach a larger piece that is easier to hold.

I was about ready to make something to hold them in the lathe to trim them as hard as they were to cut. At least they size really easy which was my biggest concern.

You do realize that tracer accuracy isn't going to be great....right? And they normally won't fly to exactly the same point as the non-tracer equivalent bullets you might shoot. Also some don't light until they're over 80yds downrange by design. If you want them lit right out of the barrel, pin-prick the sealing disk on the bottom with an automatic center punch and they'll normally be burning bright soon as they clear the muzzle.

Please don't underestimate the fire hazards present with tracers and incendiary ammo that others have mentioned. They burn bright and for a LONG time and will ignite stuff you otherwise wouldn't have dreamed would burn...don't ask me how I know.:)

If you really want to have fun with the 50's, find some Spotter Tracer rounds. They're in the mid 800's weight wise and must be downloaded to about 1700 fps which will be about 170 grains of 5010 or so. Trying to run full charges under the ST projos is inviting over-pressure and potential bursts in the muzzle brake which can hurt you badly. The ST's make a loud explosion when they hit with a big puff of smoke and never fail to please everyone who sees them.

Also...the Blue Tips are spectacular but also must be cautiously loaded. I've got a couple coffee cans full of them upstairs and some had enough corrosion on the lead base sealing plugs to prevent me from trusting them for loading. If the base plug leaks...you get a muzzle detonation which can damage the brake and hurl jacket back toward the firing line. Downloading them a bit is also prudent trying to prevent the inadvertent detonation before the target. And speaking of targets....the 1lb propane cylinders make a most excellent one for the Blue Tip incendiary rounds. Going larger on the propane cylinders does not make the fireball bigger and just wastes money. We've shot up to 50lb bottles which was a disappointment with about the same fireball as the 1lb'er then it sat and burned for quite a while. Again...be careful to not set fire to the world...and have fun.:)

I know nothing is going to shoot as good as a solid base bullet. But I am surprised they group as good as they do.

I bought these because they were cheap. I'm poking holes in paper with them. Most don't light &I really have no want at the moment for them to. A little puff of smoke at the target is all that is noticed. Some day I might try some reactive targets but not in the near feature. That isn't to discourage talking about it tho. I love reading the information. More info about different projectiles & there starting loads along with the good information about things like reducing the chance of them popping off is very welcome.

Thanks for all the info so far. Keep it coming.

Hey KINGMT-- if you need some 50 ball pulled military surplus you might check River Valley Ordnance in Missouri. They are RVOW.COM.
The late Mr. Tom Osley used to do some reloading of the 50's for me, before I even had a 50 BMG. I used to live about 1/2 mile from their factory.

Sounds like a barrel of fun. I hope to be able to afford one myself someday its on my bucket list. At the present time my Plastic Surgeon absolutely would skin me alive. lol

I went back out to shoot some loads yesterday. I really love this rifle. I can hardly wait to buy some nice bullets & step out a bit to see how I can do. I did find a place yesterday to shoot 300 yards. However since I was trying to see what I can do with these pulls I keep shooting at the 200. I took the best two loads from the last shoot a couple of weeks ago & loaded in half grains in between them & above the best to see if I could find better. The weather was completely different then it was 2 weeks before. Temperature was low 60's yesterday vs low 30's before. This made a huge difference in pressure compared to before. Where I didn't see any signs of pressure before & the loads had almost no recoil before there was signs this time with much more recoil this time.

I shot with a chrono this time & found something that surprised me. I found a spot with the least SD which produced the worst groups & the one that shot the best groups had the worst SD. However the load that shot the best groups last time also produce the best groups this time.

When using junky bullets to determine group size I usually drop the worst shot & minus bullet diameter to the closest tenth.

This is the load I used worked up in my rifle.

I used WC872 @ 220gn(lot 48779), CCI dome top primers, LC 14 brass, & (by actual weight) 608gn APIT. I consider this the maximum load to keep the brass healthy & not abuse the rifle. I may change my mind in warmer weather.

FPS 7' from muzzle
Max 2866
Min 2652
Adv 2718
SD 88

Group size 1.5"

I didn't have all the bullet info entered for the string above. It was the first time using this app. I'm still learning to use it.
