I have several Mauser rifles, but one of my favorite is an old beat up Czech VZ24. Just about all the finish is worn off and the stock looks like a corn cob, but I love it.
It was used in Romania as an Instructie rifle. Now depending on who you talk to, they will say that the rifle was used as a trainer and others will say that is was used by what we would call The National Guard.
The one thing I know for sure is, it was well used.

I traded a nice VZ24 for this rifle. A member on another forum had bought it and was going to use it as a shooter. I told him that it was worth more to me as a collector, and I would trade him a nicer rifle for it. So I shipped him a nice VZ24 with the same 1938 marking for him to inspect. He thought I was crazy for wanting to trade such a nice rifle for a beat up one. So we made an even trade and both ended up very happy.

Good for you Gunny! Its nice when trades work out well for everyone.

It dosent look that rough, and ive never seen an "instructie" before, very cool.

Ordinary people can not understand why a collector would prefer a beat-up rarity over a nice shootable specimen.
I can understand. I looked at guns with trench art and considered buying one (back when I had spare money).
VZ-24s are not rare, I have shot one, but that's the first Instructie I have seen.
Thanks for sharing.

That's a real interesting piece, Gunny.. As long as you like it then it was a good deal. How's the bore? Even if it looks like its had a few too many rounds through it don't give up on it until you shoot it. I've got an old 1908 Brazilian Mauser in 7x57 with a bore that has a lot of visible wear, but no pits, and it's a great shooter. I've had it almost 25 years and put lots of rounds through it and it still shoots as good as when I got it and the bore condition still looks the same as it did then.

The bore is dark, but I don't have any plans to shoot it. I have two are three more VZ24s in my collection. One is in great shape. Looks like it went through a refurbishment. The bore is bright and shiny and it shoots great.
I have one in 7mm that I need to finish restoring so I can shoot it.

Nice rifle. Very cool markings. That's part of the fun of old war rifles. If it shoots, even better. Glad you were able to make a trade that worked out for you both.
