I have one just like it the "persuader" model.
However my cheapest is a Stephens Model 320 that was $159 on sale at Academy for Black Friday.

My first shotgun- A 20 ga NEF single shot in roughly 1988 for $45.

Haven't bought a new one in years, but the last one is nice. A Verona 501 2-barrel set, 410 and 28ga. I think I paid $1295 back in the 90's. They run about $1600 wholesale now. My cheapest new one was a Winchester 1300 XTP. I bought it because of the screw-in chokes. Then Remington came out with their RemChoke the next year.

A dozen years ago, I went to Sports Authority to buy a Mossberg 500 that was on sale. It was a clearance sale, and they had just one. Unfortunately, the store also had only one employee who could do the paperwork on a firearm sale, and he had failed to show up for work that day. I waited a few hours and returned, but the employee was still whereabouts unknown. The manager begged me to come back once more, promising to "treat me right." So, I returned in the evening to learn that said employee had finally reported for work. With the manager's discount applied, and including tax, I paid well under $150 for a brand-new Mossberg with a wood stock, 28-inch vent-rib barrel, and three choke tubes.

I got the same one for 159.00 at Gander Mt on a holiday special. A little heavy but smooth and solid. Love it. Also I got my Rem Wingmaster back in the late 70s for 179.00 at Kmart.

Mossberg 500 for $189 at Dick's circa 2001. It has a birch stock and is a little heavy, but fills the bill well for a backup gun. Used 870's (generally pretty beat up and usually missing most of the choke tubes) were going for $150 back then. I had twin sons that were old enough to hunt that year and was scrambling for guns.

Several years ago I bought a case of Federal 00 buck and filled out paperwork, got a Stevens 320 Security for "free". But I spent a lot of coin on the 00 buck.

When I was a kid, I bought a H&R Topper in 20 gauge for 43 dollars. Kept the receipt for years, lost it in a move a long time ago, along with my first hunting license, etc.
Unfortunately, I sold that shotgun years ago to help fund a Browning A5 I just had to have.

Around 10 years ago, $50 for a break action for budget hunting. Not sexy but it will do the job.

I picked up a Rossi matched pair 22lr/20g single shot for 120 something a few years ago from dicks as a pack gun

When I was 12 (in the early 60's) my Dad bought a Springfield Arms (later bought out by Savage/Stevens) single shot break-open 20 gauge mod choke for about $20 for me to go pheasant hunting. The first year out in the field I was not allowed to carry any ammunition. The "elders" were watching my gun handling/crossing fences, et al, and I was basically a bird-dog to flush out the birds from the "cedar swamps" so the shooters could hit the birds. Just to be with them was heaven to me.

I will never forget that. Long time ago.

The first gun I actually paid for with my own money was a Remington 870 12 gauge VR 26" IC choke for $110 to shoot skeet at the range I was working for in 1969. It had a very shallow drop at the heel which allowed me to see the entire top of the VR.

Best shooting shotgun I ever had.

In the mid seventies I bought, from K-Mart, a Boita, 12 ga, O/U. I think it was $170 . I saw the same gun 20 years later...about the same price.

I bought a Savage 24-S new in 1971 for $59. 22 rifle barrel on top of a 20 gauge full choke barrel. I could not hit running or flying upland game with the shotgun barrel as it was choked too tight for me. Shooting slugs was an exercise in frustration, too. So I traded it off. Good riddance!

Question - Is that a real color case hardening finish they put on those things, or just the cheaper chemical treatment?

I only own three scatterguns. The first is a 20g single-shot imported from Brazil by FIE, purchased from a Woolworth's store in 1986, I think, for $89 or so.

The second is some sort of H&R 12g single that was given to me by a co-worker in around 1994. It's a junker, with what is clearly a less-than-scrupulous history; its barrel and stock are both cut down to just above legal lengths, and what is left of the stock is wrapped in electrical tape. I took it thinking it might be a good practice piece for bluing (something I never got around to trying.) It had been given to the guy who gave it to me. He said he's fired it twice, the first time drawing blood since he tried it one-handed. Another thing I've never gotten around to is making it disappear somewhere.

The third is a H&R Pardner Protector in 12g that I got about three years ago for $179 at Gander Mountain. Yet another thing I've never gotten around to is shooting it.

I guess you could say I'm not much of a shotgunner anymore (I did shoot shotgun expert in law enforcement back in the late eighties.) In fact, I believe this is my first post in this sub-forum.

My parents bought a .410 gauge "Topper" for me in the mid-70s, for my chore of guarding the garden from bluejays and robins. I'd take a lawn chair, a book, a pitcher of kool-aid, an anodized aluminum cup, the shotgun, and a box of birdshot shells, and wait till I heard bird noises. I think they got it from Sears. It has a black-painted wood stock and fore-end, and a black plastic spacer between the receiver and fore-end. Dunno what they paid for it, probably less than $50. I still have it, here's a photo:

A Remington Express. Sold it off soon afterwards. Later found an old Wing Master for about the same price Big Five sold me the Express for ($250, IIRC) The elderly Wing Master was 1000x the gun the Express was.
I later passed the Wing Master on to my grateful nephew, as every young man should possess a good shotgun.

I've never bought a new shotgun.
I did buy an unfired 870 Magnum Express for $150 otd at a local pawn shop.
It's still unfired.

Dad gave me a 12 gauge 870 for my 16th birthday in 1982. Still got it the rest have been used. Dad paid 180 for it.

Recently?

When Walmart decided to get out of the assault shotgun business they had 930SPX marked down to $239.00. I got the last one at our store.

I paid $149.99 for a brand new Browning Double-Auto! Of course I bought it in 1961 when I was 19 years old, just prior to me enlisting in the USAF. I still have that old Double-Auto and still like it as well or better than any of the many different shotguns I've owned over the past half century.

Last shotgun I got was a trade a NEF singleshot 12 gauge from a friend of my brother, I am by no means a "tactical" guy so I had a red dot sight I wasnt using and he had a single shot I was wanting, Fair trade across, It came with a homemade but well done green camo job, 18 inch barrel that was hacked off, I had a gunsmith put a new bead on, its been a great jeep gun that serves as a water moccasin when fishing gun or just a travel thing in general.

Used Whinny 1200.

In 1982 I bought a brand New Remington 1100 that was on sale for $130. Owned it for a few months then traded it straight up to my best friend for his Browning BLR in .358 win

Not sure but I think it is real color case hardening. Looks the same as what's on my Marlin 120 single shot. Not the greatest looking color case hardening but I don't believe it's a chemical application.

Mossberg 20 ga pump for $125 back in '84. The gun and the price are unremarkable, but what does seem amazing now was that I bought it at Thrifty Drug ... in California ... with no waiting period or background check.
