awkward ccw places

I don’t worry too much about it here in Tennessee. I can open carry if I want, but choose not too often. I wear oversized shirts anyway just for comfort. My biggest problem comes from my daughter running around at the checkout and smacking her head on the grip then yelling out “Ow daddy, your gun hurts”. The little turd has done that 3 times in busy stores and most everyone finds it funny. She no longer does that, if she likes to play on her iPad. I carry a Glock 17L with a TLR-1HL and have no problem hiding it.

I carry every day, all day. If my gun isn’t welcome, neither am I. At some point I worried about it showing, but not any more.

Good heavens. Somebody tries to disarm me, the last thing they need to worry about is "proving a point". They will NOT be waltzing away.

Well, good for you. Unfortunately, I'm neither young, nor slick. I'd rather play the safer percentage, than be sorry.

Open carry is legal where I live so if my holster peaks out now and then, and it does, it doesn't bother me.

OP, if open carry is legal where you live, and I believe it is, I think you're worrying too much.

If it bothers you that much, it sounds like a change in gun, a change in wardrobe, or a change in both is needed. Carrying less is not an answer as far as I'm concerned.

What holster and position are you using for your j frame? The j frame is one of the most easily concealed guns out there so I am just curious what combo you're using. I feel fairly certain that with the right setup it can be made to work.

Definitely not Florida. Florida has a specific exception to its requirement that handguns be concealed that allows for the "brief open display" of an otherwise-concealed firearm as long as it is not in a threatening manner (unless used in lawful self-defense.)

Florida does not prohibit "printing", either. It only requires that the firearm be concealed, and defines a concealed firearm as one that is "concealed from the ordinary sight of another person."

Until around 2009, accidental exposure was considered brandishing in many Jurisdictions in Florida. The state law was changed to specifically address this issue.

^^ Yes, it was. Pre-emption, passed in 1987 and amended in 2005, was given its "teeth" in that year, meaning local officials could actually be personally prosecuted for running afoul of it.

In 2011, what was supposed to become an open-carry law was passed, but had been watered down to nothing more than a de-criminalization of brief open display.

Who were you asking?

For the M&P I have a Mika Pocket strong side and a Galco Ankle Glove with Tension holder when I feel like ankle carry.
For the NAA an NAA Ankle holster for deep cover and for the left pocket something I found in the used holster box at a gun store that was originally made for a small .25 and had customized for the NAA. Total cost including the work done at the cobbler was $10

I’ve carried a gun most every day for 35 years. As a high speed, low Drag rookie cop, I carried the same gun, 24-7. A full size 1911. With two spare mags. Usually in a Milt Sparks Roadrunner. (Dang that’s a good holster). For a cover garment, in the summer, I used old camo jackets with the sleeves torn off. I was quite the fashion statement.

Walked into my favorite eatery. Walked all the way through the place to my booth. Sat down and realized the vest got hung up on the butt and, the entire bad ass early 1980’s two tone 1911 with its E nickel frame was completely exposed.

Not....one....person....noticed.

Friday night. Packed.

And, this was before CHL in Texas.

Now, I carry a Sig P239 appendix under a T shirt.

Much better way to carry for me.

The trick is to stop caring. Laws vary by state, but usually the standard is "concealed from common observation." If you're printing, or even if your coat tail rides up, you still meet that standard. If someone detects you're carrying and they get upset -- that's THEIR problem.

I thought the OP was having trouble concealing a j frame. I may have misread, in which case I apologize.

I'm in Massachusetts, and I do worry somewhat about my gun being seen.
In warmer months I find it somewhat difficult to cover my M&P .45c. It rides at 3 o'clock in an alien gear iwb holster. So I carry my 442 in a Mika pocket holster.
The sport coat idea is nice if you can pull it off, but Chippewa boots, Carhartt pants and a tee shirt don't seem to fit.....
Dress around the gun is a fine idea, but doesn't always work. I find fitting a gun I'm comfortable with into my wardrobe is easier for me.
9 rounds of .45 is preferable to 5 .38, but in this state I do not want my gun to ever be seen.

Again, check out the Duluth Trading Company presentation coats, they work with boots jeans and/carhartt pants. At least, my wife doesn't complain so there's that.

I will check them out. I believe they are online only, and if not there isn't a brick and mortar near me. How do their sizes run? I have found different retailers to have wildly different ideas about sizes.

I’ve pretty much stopped carrying IWB for the reasons the OP stated. I’d find that I’d been walking around a store for who-knows-how-long with my shirt hung up on the grip of my gun exposing everything, and it’s very hard for me to sit down and keep a gun in my IWB holster covered. I know everyone says to dress around the gun, but I find oversized shirts to look extremely sloppy so that’s not an option for me. Half the time I’m going somewhere after work anyway so I’m wearing a tucked in polo or button up shirt. What I did to solve this was started pocket carrying 90% of the time. A j-frame may appear to the user as printing pretty badly in a jeans pocket, but trust me, not many people out there are going to be staring at some random dude’s thighs.

Meh... I live in Utah where, legally speaking, it doesn't matter. I have only been addressed by one person in the last 20 years who saw my gun. I was pulling wire through a ceiling grid on a ladder with my arms above my head. My shirt lifted so high he could see it clearly.

The irony is that he wanted to know what I was carrying, how much it cost, and if I liked it :)

My experience is that they are spot on to the chart.
That's been my experience too. I'm going to order a Presentation Jacket from them for CCW when I want to dress up just a little bit, and I'll be ordering it in XL - the same size as the half dozen or so other jackets and coats I own (including one Duluth Trading "Chore Coat"). The only Duluth Trading clothing item I have that I have that's anything other than XL is an XLT (Tall) vest that I wear while working around the place. That's because I like vests to hang clear down to my hips. That's just more comfortable to me.
BTW - those Duluth Trading "Ranger" belts in their catalogs are pretty stout. Mine has stood up pretty well even though there's often a full sized 1911 or heavier handgun hanging from it when I'm bumming around in the hills or working out on the back part of our place.

I was a little paranoid the first month or two but have gotten over it. Finding the right holster for how you want to carry makes a big difference, and sometimes adjusting how you dress slightly.
I never wear hoodies or sweatshirts that have the elastic or whatever it is around the waist. That makes them ride up and stay up when I reach over head. Stuff with a loose waist like a button up work shirt, or a 1/4 zip fleece that fits loosely are much better about staying down over your gun.
I am 6'3" tall with a very short torso so it is easy for me to find shirts that will cover a gun reliably.

I've been packing a concealed firearm of some flavor for over 50 years and never been detected.. The sheep are too busy with their cell phones to notice or if they see a holster, they think it's a cell phone.
Be aware of what you are doing, but quit worrying about it.

That you know of. I posted a thread here a couple of months ago about sitting in the lobby of my church counting people who were carrying, none of whom had any idea that I was aware that they were armed. I never said a word
