Alright folks, I'm looking at getting a pair of range grips for my S&W .45 Colt Mountain Gun. Something to use while putting lots of rounds down range. I'll keep my Cocobolo grips for showtime.

Looked at Altamont, Hogue, Pachmayr, etc.

Suggestions?

Those Hogue wood grips are expensive.

What about Altamont? Don't they have a special relationship with S&W?

I have two pairs of Altamont grips and I’m not impressed.

From a side view they look real good but the edges of the grips are crudely machined to profile leaving a squared off edge with sharp corners. They’re actually very uncomfortable under recoil because of the edges of the grips.

For my .45acp Mountain Gun I ordered a pair of the factory RB N frame rubber grips, look/feel much like old style Pachs, but look better and have the Smith logo molded into them. Note that these are real RB grips, not the dorky looking SB conversions that came on the gun.

Since the 45 Colt Mountain Gun is not that big on recoil (it's not a Ruger but can handle 45 ACP pressure levels (23k psi)), the round to square butt conversion feels good and looks good. There is no need for rubber, like you were shooting magnums or something. If you paid for a Smith, let alone a nice Mountain Gun, the extra for nice wood should not be a deal breaker. My 625 PC has the square butt conversions and shoots like a dream.

A lot of my N frames have pre-war service stocks. They are pretty much useless to me. I loathe rubber grips, and find that I can get a much more comfortable grip with wood grips appropriately sized to my hands.

I use Ahrends on all of my S&Ws that don't already have target stocks. They are far from cheap, but they also aren't expensive compared to custom fitted stocks like Herretts (which are worth it if you want an excellent grip). I use them between multiple revolvers when they go to the range since I can't afford to have a set for each of them.

I don't have any round butt N frames, but I would choose their round to square conversion personally. Visually I like Ahrend's target stocks on revolvers with barrel lengths 5 inches and up and the tactical stocks for 4 inches and less. No finger grooves for me.

For really beautiful stocks that are also very functional, look at Culina Grips. They have the coke bottle profile found on the target stocks that came with the Pre-29.

Want a nice pari of grips? Try these, had them on a .45 MG and .44 MG. S&W prod_248700000 @ $68. Noticed they are now called Fancy Walnut Grips round to square conversion. They were called Presentation Grips when I bought mine.

I prefer Pachmayr Presentation grips on my S&W's but Lyman has discontinued all of them for the N-frame.

I've been scouring FleaBay and the gun shows for used Presentation grips. Unfortunately, the Presentation round butt grips are few and far between.

The square butt Presentation N-frame grips may fit on the round butt frame. The K-frame square butt grip fits the K-frame round butt frame, but they wiggle too much for my liking.

Pachmayr still offers a Gripper model for the round butt frame and is an OK substitute. I'm just not a fan of finger grooves. Others like finger grooves.

Hello All. My first post here!
I recently purchased the rubber Houge OEM grips from S&W that come on the standard 629 round butt N frame. My 3 inch 629 (deluxe model) came with wood stocks that look nice but were uncomfortable to shoot, like the OP. They're not available on the S&W online store so you have to call to order. I like them mostly because they're the only Houge's I found that cover the entire back-strap, especially the part the hits the web of your hand. If anyone is interested, the product code number is 413870000. I don't recall the exact price but they were very reasonable... I'm pretty sure they were under $30.

The 45 Colt though is not that punishing in terms of recoil, compared to the 629 (44 Mag). Covering the back strap lengthens the reach to the trigger, which may be counter productive for some.

Want to put some show stopper functional shoes on? Check out Nill Griffe; heart stoppers and bad to the bone!!!

My favorite N-frame RB stocks are the factory flat-sided combats.

Here's a rather plane set on my blued 45 ACP Mountain Gun (actually a M-25 with a M-50 tapered barrel cut to 4").

And another more colorful set on a 325 NG

Like most good things S&W ever made, these are no longer available.
