so I just picked this up on a whim after going to the gun store to trade in a R51 for a shield, but wow is the shockwave a hoot.

Had my doubts as I've never been a fan of pgo shotguns but the raptor grip changes that a bit for me. Surprisingly easy to hit with inside of 20 yards. Shot 2 3/4 #8s and some 2 3/4 00 buck.

I wouldn't count this compact powerhouse out as a HD gun at all. Gonna take some more shooting and drills to ensure my thoughts on that but either way, a shooting session with the shockwave will for sure leave you smiling. YMMV

Side note: anyone know the legalities of a vertical foregrip on this?

Well doggone it, beeenbag::D. I spent the day waffling back and forth between a new compact single stack 9mm (practical, but if I am honest, will not be carried any more than my LCPII) and the Shockwave. I left Rural King grumbling. The PPS Mod 2 felt so good. I thought about the EC9S because I like Ruger and and the price.

But I am down a compact "just cuz" shotgun. I love my old Ithaca 37, but I sort of want a modern gun that is under 20" at the barrel. The 18" 590/870 with a full stock makes more sense, but I keep coming back to being able to toss that stumpy little "firearm" in my truck cruiser-loaded with 0000 Buck and a couple other specialty rounds stuffed in the shell hoops of a scabbard.

I may have to sneak over there tomorrow morning while my wife is working and pick one up. I was looking for an excuse, but I'll take this thread as a sign:D

I've decided to put the Shockwave on hold for a few months. It'll be spring soon which means no time for hitting the outdoor range:(
I'm picking up a single stack 9mm now, but the Shockwave is probably going to be my next purchase:D

I have wanted one of these for a few months now........well actually I want the Remington TAC 14. Not because I think that is a better gun, but just because I have a number of other Remington 870s so I wanted to keep things the same, just in a different configuration.

Problem is that I have never seen the TAC 14 or the Shockwave in a store. I did see a couple Shockwaves for sale at a gun show, so I got to play with one.

I don't have any specific reason for wanting to own one of these, other than the fact that I think they are cool. FWIW: I own one of the Serbu Super Shorty 870s; so the people that say these guns serve no practical purpose can save that argument for somebody else. The fact that I think they are cool is plenty enough reason for me to buy one.

FWIW: here is a video of a gun harvesting a couple deer with a Shockwave (clone). I am not sure of the legal implications of making one of these yourself out of a normal shotgun in the US, however, based on the way this guy talks I am guessing that he is in Canada.

I hate to be "that guy" and the bummer poster but I have to ask, why? Not being negative, just curious what you'll do with the shockwave? It seems limiting and just "cool" looking. I get variety is "the spice of life". But help me understand this gun.

I have seen new owners of them at the range. They usually admit they bought them as a novelty.

And ?

All the guns I own were bought as a "novelty". I have a full safe of "novelties".
I am definitely not the guy that has to justify things like this to myself by making up some kind of "reason" why I need it. The reason is that I like it, I think it is cool, I think it will be fun and since I worked for the money to buy it; I don't need to come up with some other bogus reason for wanting it.

There is no "and"....I was just reporting my observations and findings and not passing judgement.

I just picked up a shockwave today, now I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet. I am waiting on a case of 00 buckshot to arrive. I view it as a sound purchase for home defense purposes. It certainly fits the bill for that. Range time will be limited to practice to ensure I am proficient with it for it's intended purpose.

I think the folks that pass their judgment on this gun based on their experience, or others experience, with standard PGO shotguns are doing themselves and those that read their opinions an injustice. I personally never cared for PGO shotguns at all, but something about the raptor grip and this configuration makes it totally different. I can shoot it just as accurately as my 18.5" 870 with a shoulder stock when keeping it under 20 yards or so. And it's sooo much fun to shoot, especially with 00 buck. I could rack off several fast shots, hitting 6" steel spinners, and the size makes it very handy. Like I said in my OP, I want to do some more training with it, but I'm definitely not ruling it out as a close range defense gun, HD mainly.

Yes, general purpose or woods carry, I'd want a full size, no doubt.

My advice to anyone that hasn't shot one and is the least bit interested, go shoot one. It's totally different in my opinion. To those that haven't and want to keep throwing it in the standard PGO shotgun category, hush up. :neener:

While I actually like the guy and his amateur footage, he shoots two deer twice. And the second deer needed a 3rd shot. Im sorry, but that is not a gun that should be used for hunting. You want it for HD or a range toy, fine. But not hunting.
My thoughts exactly.

I had a SpeedFeed grip on a Mossberg with an eighteen inch barrel at one time. That Raptor style grip isn't hard to control. You can point shoot it pretty well. Traded off that shotgun for something else awhile ago. Still have that SpeedFeed set though. Think I might pick up a used Maverick 88 cheap one day and put another one together some day. It was fun to shoot!

How is that mounted? And what kind of laser is it?

It is a laserlyte cmk5 small rail model.

it is mounted on a monstrum pic rail made for the mossberg 590 series. if you look at the photo, the laser is the small thing at the front of the rail with the 2 small buttons on it. The laser is adjustable, and as the target gets farther out, the laser dots will spread just like shot does.

Congrats on your new shotgun. I personally believe the shotgun is the best home defense. I chose the Mossberg 500 Flex in 20ga 18". I love the pistol grip and placed a "Forearm extended grip with a tactical flashlight. For my longer arms I needed that grip. I also like the 20ga. as I can practice with a lot of ammo down range each month and like the ballistics. Congratulations on your fine firearm, hopefully you will get it on the range often. Even shotguns need frequent training and practice.

fortunately my location allows my backyard to be my range, its very nice to have steel targets available a few steps out the back door and also a porch makes for nice brass retrieval. I will say though, shooting down off of the porch at steel with this thing, sure likes to dig some trenches with the 00 buck.

I hope it serves you well. Just don’t shoot it like the lady in “Swatmag” appears ready to do for their article covering the Shockwave. At least not if you like your clavicle and jaw.

https://www.swatmag.com/article/mossberg-590-shockwave-short-barreled-12-gauge-revolution/

I haven't shot the Shockwave yet, but I have trigger time behind Mossberg and Remington shotguns with pistol grips and 18" barrels.

You are in no danger if you offset the gun to one side (the right side if you are right-handed) such that if the gun comes back too far it does not hit you in the face. To begin, and gain confidence in the idea, hold the gun well off to the side then aim looking at the side of the barrel rather than over the top.
