Thanks for the warm welcome. I really dislike hollow-points for shooting animals and I'm a hunter. This M57 doesn't like lead bullets as much as jacketed bullets. I'm loading Berry's plated bullets in my 9mm and 45ACP. Is anyone using the .41 Berry's plated bullets? If so, at what powder loads?

I use Berry's plated bullets, exclusively now. The indoor range where I shoot, doesn't allow plain lead bullets. They're so much cleaner, I wouldn't go back to lead if I could.

I load mine on the mild side. Paper targets don't take a lot of killing.

No I never used their .41, but I've used plenty of .40. And frankly I like www.xtremebullets.com better.

AND Hello, I'm just over in WA and I have a .41Mag.

I’ve been using the Rainier 220gr FPRN with good success with Unique. The plating on the Rainiers is very thin and you have to use caution when crimping. Accuracy has been great with target loads. I’m going to try the Berry’s when it’s time to reorder.

I load the X-Treme plated 210 Gr bullet in .41 Mag using True Blue. It runs about 1025ish FPS from a 4" M-57. Numerous medium speed powders will/would work for this, what do you have?

The jacketed bullet I like best is the Remington 210grn JSP... it's a fantastic bullet, and one that shoots well out of any of my 4 .41's. With the exception of defense ammo, I don't really care for HP's, either.

One other thing you might try is a good gas-checked cast bullet like Cast Performance or Montana.

Add me to the list of people who run xtreme plated 210's in Model 57's. But I just shoot for fun/targets.

If I were trying to use my .41 for hunting and didn't like JHP's, I would probably look at one of the copper solids. I have read good things about them in terms of both accuracy and terminal efficacy.

Ya, that's the bullet I was looking for. Can't find them anywhere. Do you know a current source?

Well, right now I only have 380+ polished .41 cases with primers installed. I'm looking at powders such as 2400, H110 but am waiting to find a bullet I want to load before buying the powder. I guess I have to decide to reload both plinkers (Berry's or Xtreme) and hunting bullets ( gas checked Cast) since I can't find one size fits all. My last resort is going to be Speer Ram Curl hollow points because they are the cheapest and could be used for both purposes. I have been dabbling with filling the hollow point with J&B Weld epoxy.

I use Xtreme plated but mostly in 41 Special. I don't really shoot anything mild in my 41 Mags. I have no objection to 210 XTPs and have confidence in putting H110/W296 behind them.. You might check Rimrock as a good source for gas checked bullets.

Why not Call Speer and ask if they think it will hold up and do what you want. It is supposed to hold together well. Looking at what choices Midway had earlier today that was what caught my eye as something worth trying.

If I were a handgun hunter, I think I might experiment with these: https://cuttingedgebullets.com/41-220gr-handgun-solid
Certainly wouldn't have to worry about those coming apart or failing to penetrate. :)

I wonder if that would make the expand more, or less. Another good question for Speer.

Good lead on the bullets. Expensive, at over a buck apiece, but it would be easier than filling hollow points with J&B Weld epoxy.

As I mentioned, if you are not discounting cast bullets, take a look at the Cast Performance 250grn WN/GC... I've run about 200 of those through 3 of my .41's and they work well over W296/H110. I have chrono readings if you want them. Montana Bullet Works also has some lighter GC'ed .41 bullets if the 250's are too much. The key to cast bullet accuracy is a properly fitting bullet, I've found the CP's and Montana's very good in that regard.

Why would you want to use a hunting bullet that Does not expand its just going to put a pencil hole inside and out of the animal

This is from Speer's web site.... .410" Deep Curl HP 210 grain

"
Speer® electrochemically bonds the DeepCurl® jacket to the lead core to create the toughest, most accurate handgun hunting bullet possible. Pre-formed petals expand reliably and consistently and the bullet’s high weight retention ensures deep penetration on heavy-bodied game."

  • Electrochemical process bonds the jacket to the core
  • Pre-formed petals for reliable, controlled expansion
  • High weight retention and deep penetration

I understand your question, I am not looking for a non-expanding bullet, I'm looking for something other than hollow points (see my long story below). Since I couldn't find any jacketed soft points, the copper solids are worth looking at. As to a pencil hole, I'm shooting a 0.410 diameter "pencil" and that through-and-through hole in a vital area would be close to the diameter of a mushroomed .243 bullet, I'd venture to guess, only I'd get blood trail from both sides of the animal. Could also take quartering away shots on game I might normally pass on with a pistol.
The long story - I shot a 250 LB escaped butcher pig with my 45ACP as it ran by at 20 yards. Three shots right behind the front leg. Pig continued on and then I put it down with a shot to the head as it came around the shed. Blood dripping out of the three holes in her side. I skinned her out and all three hollow points were completely mushroomed and stuck in the fat layer. Didn't even penetrate the ribs. To butcher another pig I shot it in the head with .22 as always, normally they drop so I can bleed them out, but this time nothing happened, I chambered another round, repeated the shot, again nothing happened ( except by now was one pissed off pig with a headache). I checked my gun and found .22 hollow points. I reloaded with 22 solid lead bullets and the pig went down on the first shot.
I have absolutely no use for hollow points for killing animals, farm or big game.
I do appreciate your question though, as I'm not sure of my audience being new to this forum.

I'm a huge fan of Cast Performance bullets which are used in Grizzly Cartridges factory ammunition. They are extremely well made and accurate for me in several cartridges although I don't load for the .41 Magnum. IMO the price is fair especially since they are high quality bullets. (32¢ a bullet w/gas check)

Of course not cheap for plinking but a good price for a hunting bullet.

Just thinking but maybe the 45 acp bullets did what they were Designed to do and they were not Designed to pig hunt Just my opinion I have shot deer with hard cast lead good hit on the deer bullet did a complete pass through There was vary little blood and the deer ran a long ways my point is
bullet Selection thin skinned came i want a softer bullet that will Expand big Tough came need a harder bullet that will not expand as fast
anyway just my 2 cents
