.40 S&W, whatcha got, what do you want

The Glock 27 and 29 are two of my favorite 40s.

I have 40's in a P229, Glock 27, FNS and P320. The P229 is my favorite, and is by far the best shooter out of the 4. I've been pleasantly surprised with the accuracy of the P320.

My son has my old Glock 27 after I got the Shield .40 and I have a Tangfolio Witness Compact all steel .40 as my truck gun .

S&W 4006. This is the only .40 I own. It's always been a grail gun for me but I never could find one. I was at the range one day with a friend who had one and I mentioned that I always wanted one. He offered to sell it to me for 200.00$ the next day. I was on it like Caucasian on rice

Currently have 2, a Glock 23 and a Sig P226 that I recently got during the 40 S&W LE sell down. The 226 had a short reach trigger that I could not abide, replaced with a standard one and it now wears Hogue rubber grips. I REALLY like shooting this pistol.

I had a Glock 23 years ago and sold it because of the stout recoil the girls didn't like and went to 9mm. I never truly felt the 9 was the best option and felt like I was "settling". I just recently decided that for better terminal performance that the .40sw was the better choice and worth the extra recoil for the improved ballistics and stopping power.
So I have a G23 gen 4 on the way and plans to add another shortly thereafter, along with adding a Colt Combat Commander .45acp. There's no replacement for displacement......imo

Currently only own a ppq 4” and glock 23 in 40 s&w. Thinking about adding a Hk p30L and a sig p229. I had a p229 years ago and still regret selling it so I want to replace it with another, with a rail this time. If I could find a Hk usp for a good price I wouldn’t mind one of those either.

.40 S&W is my primary carry caliber, so I have a few....3 Glock 23s, 2 Beretta 96s, 2 Ruger SR40 compacts, 2 Sig 239s, a Sig 229, and a Kahr CM 40.

Yeah, used LEO pistols are a great buy! That is something I like about Glocks is that I have no qualms buying a used one at a good price. If anything is worn out (not likely an agency would be selling unsafe guns?) it is super cheap to replace parts from a variety of sources. I think the G27 and a G21 are my only Glocks purchased new because I wanted to get the gen4 grip options.

Used to say 40 was an answer to the question I didn't ask, but then the FBI jumped ship midstream.
I started with a LEO trade-in G23 it was short lived (Glock ergonomics just don't work for me) sold it off and bought a FN FNS40 and a Sig P229, stayed with those 2 for a while then decided I needed a couple more and bought a Walther PPS and a Springfield 5.25 Competition. I really thought at that point I had the 40 bases covered and then PSA had a sale on Springfield 3.8 compact and then I saw Steyr had a rebate so now I'm up to a smooth 1/2 dozen 40s

I started out with a Beretta 9000s, the first plastic frame Beretta made I think. Since then I have added a Glock 23, and a SIG P239 in .357 SIG caliber with a .40 S&W barrel.

I have shot a few 40s but don't own any, although I got nothing against them.

My only issue is if you have a 9 and a 45 what's the point in 40, other than just to have one?

Not to mention police trade in Glocks are about the same between 40 and 45 around here. Why wouldn't you get the 45?

Recoil isn't an issue for me, but I can get both 9 and 45 ammo cheaper than 40. So that's another issue.


FWIW the 226 in 40 I shot was a sweet shooter...

I have an S&W 4004, and a 4013.
I want to trade out the 4013 for an M&P 2.0 5" .40. Some day soon.

I like the .40 S&W, but I also like 10mm, .45 acp, and 9mm.

My only .40 S&W is an "oldie"- a pre-Clintonian S&W 411 as it was then called. 11 plus 1 rounds, which was later reduced to 10 and renamed the 410. I carried mine while working as a park ranger as I preferred it over what was available in 9mm at the time (early 1990's). It was a dream to qualify with. Since my retirement it has been relegated to "trunk gun" thru no fault of it's own or the cartridge, but simply because I have higher capacity 9's and even a .45 acp Glock that carries more rounds. If I ever buy another .40 it will be a 10mm, not a .40 S&W...

I am now down to one pistol caliber. I love the .40 S&W. I carry a Springfield XD-S 3.3 in .40, my wife has one to match. When I want something bigger, I carry my S&W M&P FS in .40. There are plenty of nice calibers out there, but I like the look, feel, and ballistics of .40, and it will do anything I need from a pistol.

Well I really like my hk usp 40 compact. It's still my EDC. Otherwise I like 10mm pistols but with 40 barrels and recoil assemblies. I don't have any 45 as I gave my dad my 45 colt series 80 pistol some years ago. I didn't even have 9mm until this past summer with some of those crazy rebates on the s&w shield and the low prices on the taurus pt111 g2's.

I've had a lust for an hk usp 45 full sized but I wonder if a full sized hk usp 40 would also do it for me (and keep me in a caliber I already own).

My son got my old S&W 4006 , I personally think that platform was the most reliable .40 ever. It served the CHP faithfully until now I think.

While I agree in general about LEO trade-in's, remember the reason for the Gen 4 Glock's was because of problems with earlier generation Glock's in .40 S&W.

My first .40 was a CZ 40B (back when you could still get one new, and they were selling for $299). It was before I really warmed to .40S&W and I stupidly sold it. A LNIB CZ 40B at a reasonable price is definitely now on my 'want' list.

I also had a SIG P229 in .40 which I loved. Unfortunately, one summer (at my old teaching job we did not get a summer paycheck) I had some unexpected expenses and my summer money ran out and I needed the money more than the gun. I decided I didn't need 2 .40s, and the SIG would definitely bring more money than the Taurus (below). Now another SIG P229 has been on my 'want' list for years.

My 2nd .40 was a Taurus PT140 Millennium Pro. It started my like of .40S&W. It hasn't worked in many years, I really do need to send it in for repairs.

I currently have, and often carry when in a state where I can carry, a S&W M&P40c. I love that gun.

On my want list (other than replacing my long gone CZ 40B and SIG P229):
-SIG P239, Kahr K40, Kahr T40 and Springfield Armory EMP. I'd really like them all, but they are all metal framed, old school, single stack .40s of roughly the same size. Though, I've wanted them for 10-15 years. I can see maybe eventually ending up with 2 of the bunch, but I doubt I'd get all 4.
-Glock 23 and/or 27
-Just about any future defensive purchase in 9mm will also be considered in .40S&W.

What? The Gen 3 is still be made and of all the generations it is probably the most trouble free. The Gen4 had a long period of brass to face and erratic ejection issues. The Gen4 main purpose as far as I can tell are the multiple grip panels for adjusting the grip size. The recoil spring was changed to a nested dual spring, but the old Gen1-Gen3 recoil spring/rod was pretty famous for lasting a good while, and the pistol still able to function after the rod broke and flew out the front (after several thousands of rounds). The Gen4 is an improvement in many wyas but reliability is not one I am aware it can claim. My 2 Gen3 and one Gen 2 trade-ins have tens of thousands of rounds through them (from me at least, plus whatever the police dept shot) and I have had zero failures or issues with them. I replace the recoil spring every 4,000 rounds as part of maintenance but they all have original extractors, ejectors, strikers and springs.
