have decided to change sights on my 1911, and these caught my attention. but I wanted to kind of run it past the gallery.

  • Anyone here used this design/setup?
  • if so what's your take
  • any isssues
  • any reason NOT to get them.
and finally any real advantage or disadvantage to a fixed setup like this compared to a set with an adjustable rear?

I have them on my BUG (G26) and my SSP (G34).

I can pick up the front sight quicker with the fiber optic than the other styles.

The only issue I had was learning where in the rear sight to place the red for zero down shots since I focus on it verses the top of the front sight post. Once learned I have been very happy with them. I did break one an hour before a state match but a friend put a new rod in within minutes so it was a non issue.
I cannot use them in low light without a flashlight, my eyes can no longer see the black rear sight well enough to line it up.

I don't change the adjustable sights once sighted in so the only real difference for me between the two was the initial difficulty in sighting in, the adjustable was easier of course.

I can't think of reason not to use them.

Currently Low light is not a situation that I will be encountering with this pistol anytime soon, neither of the USPSA venues I shoot at ever use a shoot-house (one doesn't have a house to use) or hold night/lowlight matches. so no issue there.

Yeah that's kind of what I was thinking, that adjustable is only really useful when first getting setup, and then if you decide to change loads/Velocity. just trying to get data to help decide if I want to stay with a fixed setup (leaning this way), or pay an extra $20 or so for a adjustable rear and FO front from Dawson.

I want my load with my bullet weight in my gun to hit exactly where I want. Almost any fixed sight is going to be a compromise at some point unless you get lucky.

On my game guns I like Dawson sights unless I can use a Bomar/SVI copy.

I am not familiar with this particular sight, but I have to say that I decided a long time ago (after some frustrating issues) to never buy an aftermarket sight that was not adjustable. If the issue is the difference in cost, I would pony up the extra.

Agreed that you don't adjust very often, but having that control is a huge benefit IMHO.

I have a different set of experiences. In two instances on Les Baer 1911s, I have installed fixed Warren Tactical sights. I used the 0.175 front sights fiber optic sights and the flat blacks rear sights. The guns shoot point of aim at 25 yards. 230 grain, 1.25 in OAL, and 825 ft/sec are the parameters of interest. The sights are tough as hell and I'd carry them anywhere, or shoot in competition.

well I bought and installed an adjustable Dawson set...

If I have finally gotten the rear sight centered in the slide (even with the various Dawson tutorials I have been having a devil of a time getting consistent measurements of the sight in relation to the slide), I should have everything Dialed in after my next range trip. but I am at least loving the sight picture.
