For the SHOOTING activities that you actually do- what number is the least amount of rifles you could get by with to do them all? "Heirlooms", "vintage collections" and other safe queens don't count unless you want them to. For me, that number is 4: a 10-22 (no explanation needed), a M4 clone for training, HD, some hunting, etc., a "hot-rod" AR for 3 gun, and a bolt gun in 308 or 6.5 CM. Similar threads will be in Handguns and shotguns.

3. Any accurate 22. A bolt action 223. Bolt action in any caliber that is between 25 and 30 inclusive and runs between 2700 to 3000 fps. There is a a whole flock of cartridges that would take care of what I hunt. I do have preferences, but, there is many I would be comfortable with.

Need...as in need, need?
.22LR or magnum would be all i needed. Id be more comfortable with a semi in .223, but i dont NEED it.

Were i forced to limit my battery to as few rifles as necessary for me to have all my shooting/hunting/defense covered comfortably...
2 RIFLES
.22lr bolt gun, 7mm remington magnum bolt gun

If im not allowed a shotgun, then id also want a 9mm or larger PCC, or .223(or similar) semi, or any .357 or larger PCC lever.

Honestly i HAVE been completely happy with just a semi .22 (597)and a 7remmag (savage 110).
Not even a shotgun, or pistol.

4:
- Home defense/close quarters
- General Hunting
- Long Range
- .22lr for practice and plinking

Guess it depends upon how you define "get by with". Certainly less than the total, but not by much. I assume you're including hunting in "shooting activities", correct? Every gun and bow/xbow I have has a specific niche / purpose, albeit pretty heavily covered with some overlap, including a couple of "future wife" guns.

Right now? Zero but I do plan to add hunting and make long range recreational shooting a more common thing so ask me again in a year or two.

3, I suppose:
- One of my .22 LRs for pests in the garden and small game including rabbits and forest grouse.
- My .22-250 for larger pests (coyotes) and/or longer ranges.
- My .308 Norma Magnum of course for big game.
However, I really wouldn't want to "get by" without my AR for a possible home-defense rifle. Besides, it's just plain fun.:)

blackpowder cartridge buffalo gong shoot rifle, prairie dog rifle, long range prairie dog rifle, open sight deer rifle, scoped deer rifle, 22 peep sight only rifle, long range 22 silhouette rifle, cmp service rifle, nra match rifle, muzzle load rifle, one zombie rifle......another words one each. dc
ps forgot cowboy action lever gun, remembered looking at shotgun post

1.) Big game rifle (Remington 700 .30/06)
2.) Muzzle loader (Traditions BuckStalker)
3.) Defensive / Range Toy carbine (AR or AK)

I don't small-game hunt, and my range toy(s) cover plinking, so I have no personal use for a .22. I guess I could get by with just 3, but I am not ready to sell the AK just yet...

I have already done it when I was younger. I had a savage bolt action 22lr and 25-06 Tikka and I was never wanting of anything. The only other gun I really need is a 12 gauge shotgun. The rest are just recreational additions.

One; a wood stocked Ruger mini-14. That would be fun at the range, inexpensive to shoot, useful for HD, and wouldn’t look out of place hunting deer in WV.

This assumes you’re not counting a PCP pellet gun as a rifle, otherwise I’d say two rifles as I need one for small game. If I ever stop dreaming about elk hunting and actually do it, then I’d need a third rifle (bolt action 308).

M69 twenty-twoski bolt action milsurp, 7x57, 223 bolt action. Actually, I can load 223 with a small charge of pistol powder and have an 1800 FPS substitute for the 22LR. Got lots of 55 grain bullets I paid $4.80 per 100 for, so it's dang near as cheap to shoot as 22 and a bit more powerful than 22 Mag.

4. A 12 or 20 ga shotgun for small game and birds, plus home defence, so a pump gun with a mid length barrel and adjustable ore exchangeable chokes.
A long action rifle in a 30-06 family cartridge, I am building up a 35 whelen on my Savage 110 so that would work.
A 22 lr or mag, bolt gun or super reliable semi auto, right now this is an ancient Savage bilt gun but I am looking at cz 455 22s.
An ar15. If i cheat i can probably go with a couple uppers, but a 16" mid weight barrel carbine with a low power scope for small game up to little deer, and for security measures.
I'd hate to leave out all the other guns I didn't mention, but I could live(and have) with these four.

I'd get rid of me before I got rid of all of my rifles. I don't have any safe queens in rifles any more, took my opportunity to cash out on a handful of collectible leverguns in the last few years, so what I have left are what my grandpa would have called, "using rifles." I might have two or three I just don't want any more. The rest see regular use.

Squirrel-marlin 60
Woods coyotes-marlin 62 30carbine
Open country coyotes-AR15 smallbore (prefer 20practical)(need to buy that barrel)
Woods deer and (hopefully) hog-marlin 336
Open country deer-rem700 .270
Precision midrange- AR15 6.8spc
Smokepoling- tc Hawken .45
Plinking- marlin 75
Groundhogging-marlin62 .256wm

10. I need 10. Unless the wife asks in which case I need at least 10 more.

No I’m not a marlin collector, I just buy what I like and what works best for me. There does seem to be a trend. Wife didn’t know squat about guns when we started dating. I bought her a couple guns so she could shoot with me...she picked Marlin as well with no influence from me. I even explained what I was doing to the salesman and had him take pricetags off before showing her the guns. 22lr came down to marlin 60, marlin 75 (the chosen gun) and a marlin bolt rifle.

All I “need” is the AR10 308. 16” gun with a suppressor and good scope. Can take any game in North America or the world since I can pump 10 shots off quick. Target shoots with the best of them. Excellent tactical weapon if needed. If I had to thin down to just one I admit I’d like to build a better one than what I have!

Personally I shoot a lot more 308 than 22LR. So I could do without. But my boys will need one soon enough to learn on. Torn between a marlin like dad bought me and the brothers or a 10-22. It would be neat to have 3 generations with marlin 60s, I have no doubt they will make them still for the 4th.

I don't have any duplicates of any guns so if I wanted to keep doing everything I like to do with guns I would need them all since they are all distinctly different and I shoot all of them regularly. I have a range at my house so I pick something out to shoot about every other day, even if its just 5 rounds. But like I said the only rifles I actually need are a 22 and my 25-06.
