There are still 8 or 10 states that have no preemption law stating that towns in the state cannot impose their own gun laws - Illinois is one of them. So any town in Illinois can pass their own gun laws, even if stricter than the state laws. And Denver still has (I believe) a "home rule" exemption to state gun laws here in Colorado, which is why they have slightly stricter regulations than the rest of the state. And I'm sure the anti-gun folks are working on even more ways to subvert or work around the few remaining gun rights that we still have. That's why you need to pay attention to what your local politicians are up to, not just the ones you send to Washington.

Illinois has statewide preemption on handguns and accessories, but not on long guns. Home rule allows communities to pass certain Misdemeanor level local ordinances which have a maximum penalty of up to 1 year of jail time.

Handguns are protected per IL concealed carry act; but only if you have a valid concealed carry license. Technically speaking it only affects licensees but it generally prevents passage (or enforcement) of any prohibitions on handguns, magazine capacity, etc in IL.

Section 90. Preemption.
The regulation, licensing, possession, registration, and transportation of handguns and ammunition for handguns by licensees are exclusive powers and functions of the State. Any ordinance or regulation, or portion thereof, enacted on or before the effective date of this Act that purports to impose regulations or restrictions on licensees or handguns and ammunition for handguns in a manner inconsistent with this Act shall be invalid in its application to licensees under this Act on the effective date of this Act. This Section is a denial and limitation of home rule powers and functions under subsection (h) of Section 6 of Article VII of the Illinois Constitution.

Long guns are still fair game though.

I would think that city ordinance would fail to hold up to any level of constitutional scrutiny but it's going to take someone getting arrested for it and fighting it in court to "fix."

Deerfield opened a can of worms there. Can't wait to see what lawsuits come out of this, and what toll those will take on the city's budget. That's an affluent village with some residents having pretty deep pockets to fund legal moves. Heck, median income for households is over 100K/yr. There's bound to be a few well-situated gun owners who can afford good lawyers there. :)
