Six of us went to breakfast and shooting this morning. New to the group (I'm the old fart at 72), I brought only one rifle...my AI AT wearing a .308 Win barrel and Vortex Razor 5-20x50 optic mounted in a Spuhr 0 MOA unitary base. I had never tried a shot longer than 200 yards with this rifle so I had hopes, but no previous proof that I could hit with it.

Now, I've done some 600-yard shooting, with my M1As in Mil High-Power matches with irons (prone, slow-fire, mediocre results), and one of my Rem 700s just for grins (a small step up from mediocre), using my handholds that are 175 gr Federal Gold Medal Match equivalents (2600 fps with a 175 SMK). Today, my rifle gave me a 5-shot 0.5" 5-shot group at 100 yards that was dead on, so I decided to go for the 600-yard metal plates directly. I took a box of 175gr FGMM factory loads and, based on past experience and pressure altitude, tried a 4.5 mil holdover, assuming 2600 fps and a measured 5,900 density altitude, and, after two misses holding dead on, with a 1.0 mil wind correction (quartering 6 mph wind), I ended up ringing the 600-yard 1 MOA plate with 12 of 15 shots...probably my best outing yet at distance. Luckily, my efforts at the 0.75 MOA plate kept me humble with my last 3 shots, all of which missed the plate.

I had previously signed up for a long-range clinic for 1,000 -1,200 yards this coming August. I'm psyched...I actually think that I might succeed developing this discipline. I am looking forward to testing some handloads with my chronograph and dialing this rifle in a bit better. I gotta say, this shooting stuff is fun!.

Sounds like a blast....yes i think I'm funny.....

Good shooting 600s farther than I can expect to hit consistently, even 400 is edging where I'm confident unless the wind is pretty still.

Congrats. It sounds like fun day. You'll have to update us about your clinic.
