I have an M48 Mauser that I bought a while back. It’s a 1st generation (2xxx matching serial numbers) M48 that has had its crest and markings scrubbed and been turned into a BO. When I got it, I removed the cosmoline and the finish along with it. I smoothed the surface with 0000 steel wool, refinished it with BLO, and it looks pretty good, but the stock is pretty worn and rough. Do these have any collector value that would be lost by sanding the stock and finishing with satin polyurethane? There are basically no markings on the stock except the serial number, and it’s way deep in the wood.

I've not heard of them having collector value. If it will make it look nicer, I personally, would refinish it.

JMHO,

Perfect M48s are pretty common in these parts for $3-400, so not much collector value - especially if its had its crest removed. I say go nuts if it will make you enjoy it more!:)
