Both the Centerfire Rifle and Handgun ranges at the Club were rented out today and I felt like shooting, so packed up three rimfire rifles and a few handguns and went to Cap City Club for some solitary fun. As it happened, nobody was at the Rimfire range, so I set up to test rifles and ammo.

I brought three rifles: my accurized bull-barrelled 10-22, the highly modified 581 with a Lilja barrel, etc, and my bedded Rem 504. I had a couple of boxes of RWS R50, some CCI SV, and others.

The star today was the Rem 581, which turned in several 0.2"-0.3" groups! It has a very nice 1.5 lb. trigger. The 10-22 was shooting in the high 0.3's with the R50 ammo. (It likes Lapua better). The 504 was shooting in the 0.4"s. It has a pretty nice trigger.

It was hard to get comfortable on the new concrete benches. I didn't bring my heavy rest because I don't have a sporter/varmint top for it, despite trying to order one with bag, a couple of times.

Before leaving, I shot a few magazines worth out of my S&W M&P, 9mm offhand at 15 yards and kept the holes respectably close to center. Don't shoot that gun often and not as accurately as my S&W Mod. 19, but it's not a target pistol.

In all, a fun day at the range...cloudy and no wind, but a little mirage. I'm not going to show my messy BR target. (Hard to write on it when attached to the frame.) 504a (640x480).jpg

Rem 581- The star today!

Been a loooong winter!

Been a long winter indeed ! The 581 & 504 are gorgeous but where's the 10/22 picture? LOL. .... I did pretty much the same thing back on Feb. 28th when the sun was actually out and it wasn't all that cold. Took several 22's and a couple handguns down to the club and had a real good time. Even sighted in the Savage Rascal that I picked up so one of my step grand daughters would have something to learn on this summer after she turns six. By late February I'm going crazy to get to the range regardless of weather. Thank heavens for spring.

Been a loooong winter!

Tell me about it! If it's not snowing then it's raining. If it's not raining then it's freezing cold and don't even get started on the 30 to 40 MPH winds blowing in from the northwest! No it's been a lousy, loooong winter and I for one am glad it's over (at least I think it's over)!

Like the thumbhole stock on your Remington Model 581, reminds me of the thumbhole stocks Harry Lawson use to make back in the day.

Everyday at the range is nice but some are exceptional and looks like you found one, thanks for sharing!

Congrats on an enjoyable day. My life-long favorite cartridge remains the "lowly" .22LR. Thanks for the post...it lifted my spirits!

By the way, I just took delivery of my new PSA .22LR Upper. Rain kept me from the range today, but there is always tomorrow.

I'd posted the 10-22 before. It doesn't look special, but it shoots great!

A few 50 yard groups with the Rem 581 and R-50 ammo 5-3-81 Target.JPG shot yesterday - 5/3/18.

Glad the 581 still shoots great. It would have been a difficult decision as to what I might have to replace it with. The action is a bit clunky, but it shoots great, considering it was a $50 rifle when I bought it around 1975.

The R-50 ammo I have left over from Rimfire Benchrest competition wasn't my best stuff. It exhibits a few flyers and strings groups, especially with the 10-22 and Rem 504. Average groups with the Rem 504 hovered about 5/8", which isn't as good as with Lapua ammo it likes, but I'm out of that stuff.

I haven't used Eley for several years, despite it having remarkable lots these days. I had it out with my supplier when he kept the best lots for Southern shooters and shipped me 10 sample batches, then sold all of them out from under me within 3 days...making my purchase and testing a wasted effort. Eley was so variable back then, it was very expensive to use it, due to the testing necessary to find good stuff for a particular rifle. Lapua was much more consistent, though not quite as good as the right lot of Eley for your rifle.

One match, I shot two perfect 250s and a 249, missing the last shot by a 32nd of an inch. Stopped shooting BR after that, and sold my Maine record-setting 40X. A shooting buddy bought it, and is doing very well at the National level. P5070254.JPG

Not exactly rimfire benchrest but late winter boredom can sometimes get to me. Here's the Savage Rascal I took out Feb. 28th after enough above freezing temps to melt the snow, followed by a calm, sunny day. Shot some CCI Blazer and a couple other types of 22 LR although I wasn't shooting for group size. Just looking for "minute of 12 oz. can" plinking type accuracy. The adjustable peep sight is a real plus. Once I put a little right windage on it and took the elevation down a little It was putting them on the paper right where I was looking. Felt a little silly at first firing this little thing but it was so much fun I may take it out again this month now that the weather is nice. Also can fire 22 Short and Long and I haven't tried those yet but I have some here. Based on how much I'm enjoying this thing I'd wager that the step grand-daughter will get a real kick out of it this summer when she gets to try it. IMG_1116.JPG
