Here's a link to the form you can print out and send in. It's $75, and you'll get an official letter back from the historian, Roy Jinks, with the ship date, original configuration, some general details about the model, and where yours originally shipped to. Even if you don't get the letter, you might want to post some photos in the Revolver subforum-- I can think of a few people here who would be very excited to see that!

If 75 seems steep, keep in mind that Mr. Jinks will have to search through paper records to track that specific gun down, and then compose your letter.

Got the letter back from Mr. Jinks this week. He confirmed it's a Model 1905 Fourth Change.

The gun shipped on May 11, 1934 to a hardware store in Los Angeles. It was shipped with a blue finish and checkered black hard rubber round butt grips. So, the gun is all original!! My parents were born and raised in So. Cal., so the original store makes sense.

Side note, he said the original wholesale price to the store was $19.07.

Your M36-1 was shipped in 1967. There is really nothing so special about it other than the 3" heavy barrel that would make it more valuable than other revolvers of the time. I agree, they are good little 38's.

I just got a model 49, serial number 525xxx. Any help on date of manufacture?
The book I'm using doesn't always narrow the dates down to one year.
It gives me 1962-295000 then 1969-786544

If your revolver has diamond grips its made before 1968. I would guess by the numbers you gun was shipped around 1966/1967 unless it doesn't have diamond grips. Then it's probably 1968. It's hard to bail down because there is no way to know how many guns were made each year but I did get you close.

Looking for info on S&W Mod.36 w/square butt and bobbed hammer. S#J34xxxx frame has three screws. Can't seem to get a pick up right now but we'll figure it out if needed. Looking for info and value. Thanks much

In 1962 the serial numbers start with 295000. The next listing is 1969 with the numbers starting with 786544.

I'm guessing your gun was shipped around 1964 but you can't be sure how many guns were shipped each year.

I'm guessing your M36 is a no dash. The 36-1 was released in 1967 with a 3" heavy barrel. In 1968 the diamond grips were deleted. In 1966 the thumb piece was changed. All this should further your ability to narrow down the data to less than 6 years. Again, my best guess is probably 1964.

As for prices, they vary, sometimes by a lot depending in where you live. Around here they go for about $450 but I have seen them for much more depending on the condition.

All this is just my opinion, I hope it helps you.

Thanks for the info man, I screwed up on the serial number it's a J serial number I'm going to go back and edit it now
That changes everything, your M36 left the factory in 1976. It's still a great revolver and for the most part there is no change in price. Again, condition will drive the price.

a) .357
b) 4" barrel
c) square butt
d) 6 shot
e) Red plastic insert front, adjustable white outline rear
f) SN: ACT44xx
g) Model 586 (no dash)

Thanks in advance for providing this kind service!
