Shotgun vs 22

I have a Savage MK2 22 LR suppressed with a 4x scope. More than capable of head shots at squirrel range, and very quiet with aguilla HP subs. Last fall I dropped 4 in one go with 4 rounds, each in the head, in a matter of seconds. The lack of noise kept them from being alerted to the fact they were being slaughtered. Between the accuracy, quiet, and being able to pick up the squirrel in the 4x scope among the brush, its almost not fair.

Ive shot a few with 12ga #4 and 20ga shells and always blows them apart and not worth messing with. I use a 22lr now with cci standards and so head shots.

For those shooting 17cal rifles not being a jerk here just asking. You guys aren't concerned with a fast round zipping through treetops or down the road? I always hated the idea of using a 22lr for squirrel hunting cause of the round traveling who knows where once it leaves the treetops. I don't mind it now with the cci standards cause most my spots now are woods for along time and no houses or business around.

Have done both, but prefer a classic .22 with iron sights. A form of reliving the nostalgic memories of my youth. Few things better than a crisp fall day listening for rustling leaves that gives away "Mr Squirrels" location.

It depends on the location. I prefer a 22 but you must be really careful about the direction you shoot. A shotgun is safer when shooting up into trees, and probably more efficient.

I have killed more with a .22 pellet gun than anything else. It’s always been enough to get them out of any tree I have found them in.

I used to do pretty good with a Stevens 16ga when I was younger. Could take them out of the trees without tearing them up too bad
Of course, that was my only gun, so it was my squirrel, rabbit, quail and deer (with slugs) gun;)

BEHOLD THE BEAST! This is the coolest little .22lr ever made and apparently it's worth more now than it was when it was bought. Remmington Nylon Apache 77. Shoots dead nuts all day long.

Edited because of exclamation points were too abundant....

My current fave .22 rifle for squirrel is a 10/22. I still have the old Remington M512X I got for my 9th birthday and it's still a tack driver, but I just like this little 10/22 and it shoots one hole at 25 yards with CCI standard velocity.

The group on the top left is CCI Standard Velocity. The others ain't bad, but this stuff is cheap match ammo. :D

Started out decades ago with shotgun because it was my only option ( my dad's old .22 had a broken sear spring).... Eventually got to prefer a .22 and been going .22 ever since. Last year even carried on the tradition with a .22 cal. air rifle just for the challenge of getting closer. The next challenge is gonna be with the .22 Ruger Single Six just to keep life interesting.
