I voted 9mm and technically that’s true, but I’m in a bit of a transitional phase. My most commonly carried guns are a Kahr P9 for IWB and a PM9 for pocket carry in dress clothes. However, I have discovered that I have a bit of a contrarian streak because as the world moves back to 9mm I find myself moving to 40 Smith & Wesson for the first time.

I recently purchased 40 Smith & Wesson versions of both of my 9 mm Kahr guns because they were so insanely cheap. Plus, good defensive ammo in 40 is in a weird place in the market right now where it’s actually cheaper than 9 mm. I bought a case of Federal 180 HST for $299 and a case of Federal Classic 180 JHP for the same cost. A case of 124 +P Gold Dots for the 9mm is over $500, and that’s if you can find someone who’s still willing to sell it to you in the 50 round boxes. So switching to 40 gives me cheaper guns and ammo with exactly the same ergonomics. All I give up is one round of magazine capacity, and I think I can live with that. Plus, if the pendulum swings back I still have the 9mm guns.

I have been toying with carrying a larger gun in winter when I can hide it under a sweatshirt or jacket. I decided on the CZ P-07...so I bought one in 9mm and one in 40. Someone might conclude I was just looking for a reason to buy another gun...and they might not be wrong :D
I noticed that myself. I bought 40cal HST for a lot less than 9mm HST.

9mm here. I have a M&P 2.0 Compact I'll carry during cooler weather, when I'm out in the woods or if I just want a little extra gun on me, but more commonly I carry a 9mm Shield. I like shooting the bigger gun better and I'm more accurate with it, but the Shield is just so easy to carry and it conceals well under anything. As far as caliber choice goes, I don't think there's much difference in effectiveness between the common defensive calibers and 9mm is the cheapest for practice and plinking.
