My cousin who is a female and of advance age wants something for home protection and has had a 12 gauge Mossberg that was too heavy for her to handle comfortably. I believe a 410 is agequate for self protection inside a home but have not seen anything advertised for sale fitting this description, any help is appreciated.

I would look around for a 28 ga, or possibly a gas operated 20 ga.. The Remington youth model 11-87 in 20 should be ideal

Just my opinion, but I consider the .410 a poor choice for home defence.

Lots of too-heavy things are too ungainly instead. I'd want to look at the 12 ga, might suggest a shorter barrel, a switch to a 5 shot gun, a shorter stock, etc.

Agree that .410 is not something I'd want to be shooting at determined bad guys, no matter the load, or range.

If the 12 is a no-go, then step sideways to carbines. A lot of pistol caliber ones are very, very short (due to layout, mag in the grip) and very light.

An elderly person is not going to practice with a carbine and do drills, etc. A 410, loaded with some of the new defensive 000 buck should do just fine inside the home at close range. OP, you might look for a double barrel, unless she is comfortable working a pump

Mossberg makes youth versions of the 500 in .410, including a Defender model.
Edited to add: The 590 Shockwave is available in .410.
Can't seem to link with my phone today.

If OP's cousin is already used to Mossberg, why not continue with such a good recipe. I second the 000 buck load too!

I don’t see why a full size 410 couldn’t be modified by a gunsmith to suit her perfectly. Do you call it “sawed off” if it is done by a pro? Is it legal?

Why a hard-bucking pump when low recoil gas operated semi-autos are available????

Because a pump is safer than a semi-auto for a newbie. When the chambered round is shot, one needs to reload with a pump. With a semi-auto, all one has to do is pull the trigger until the mag is empty, and with a newbie pulling the trigger it might be all the brain sees. Besides, a .410 pump like the Mossberg has very little recoil.

I have two Mossberg 410 pumps. One is a 500 with 24” full choke and the other is the 590 Shockwave with 14” cylinder bore. I have no problems using a load of 5 pellets of 00 or 000 buckshot out of either one for home defense. I reload my own 3” 00 buck shells and my 500 will keep all 5 pellets in a 9” pie pan and 20 yards. That’s plenty good for defense use.

A shotgun doesn't require any less practice than a carbine. In fact, one could argue that it requires more, due the need to reload more often and work a manual action, if that's what is chosen.
