Want/Need a new single stage press for large cases,

Have you ever had the handle ratchet teeth strip?. It seems like a weak area?

I use the press to size 50 BMG cases. Even with Imperial Sizing wax, some of them take a considerable amount of pressure to size. I have never had a problem with the handle slipping. I personally like the ratchet design- I can adjust the angle of the handle to suit the height of my bench.

I've had the Deluxe 3 hole turret since 1985 and no signs of stripping those teeth. I have loaded thousands of rounds of pistol cartridges on it. The largest rifle rounds I have loaded on it have been 8mm Mauser and 30-06. I think you are on the right track with Big Boss II, if you are after quality.

There are two of the common era consumer O frames that belong in the same sentence. The big boss, and the Lee original classic cast. Any more power than that then I would look at the big O frame Champion CH4D offers.

I think my LCT has similar toggles and handle that is on the Classic O, and they are substantial.

  • A member of the British Militaria Forums had the ratchet looking part break a few years ago.I believe he was forming 577-450 brass from 24 ga brass shotshell cases.A pity he had a restored Corvette parked in his work area.Except for that one part they appear to be decent presses.

Not to downgrade Lee, but they have always seemed entry level. So I’m hesitant to go that route. I do see a lot of positive feedback on the press. I am open to one. Just rationalizing.
I have stuck .308 HARD. I have quite literally ripped cases in half on the lee classic cast. The worst stuck case I have had I rigged up a ratchet strap and tensioned it as much as I could then whacked the case from the top with a punch and a 4 pound maul. As long as the bolt is tight that engages the teeth, your good to go. I believe they either use nylock or lock washers there. I don’t recall, but my press was bought second hand and dude stripped it to save 3 bucks on shipping. I had to reassemble and I had zero issues. One part looked questionable but was functionally ok, I asked Lee and sent a picture. I had a new part 3 days later. That ratchet setup is not a thing to worry about.

Guys thanks for the input. I’m leaning towards the Redding with the Lee in a firm second. Most of my loading will be on the CO Ax so the Lee makes good sense cost wise.

I bent the handle on mine trying to pull out a stuck case (I think it was mil-spec 30-06) - lifting with both hands. Turned the bar around, and pulled until it was nearly straight. The teeth held up fine through the whole process.

The classic cast is pretty solid.

Thanks for the comments. I ordered the Redding big boss II. If it makes straight ammo I will be happy. Mostly will be regulated to power case trimming and some black powder cartridge reloading. Im getting used to the Forster Coax press.
