Silly guns that please us

Two come to mind immediately. First is one that got away. It was a Street Sweeper in .45-70, and I looked hard and long at it, the vendor sure he had a sale. Plus, I always regretted not buying that, for no reason whatsoever, other than I just wanted it. The other is my PLR-16 below. Actually bought it to piss of Dianne Fienstein, as she had it on her hit list. But is it really silly? Kinda, but certainly no sillier than a AR-15 pistol, and look how many of those there are. It's also a ton of fun at the range, and could easily be pressed into service as HD. DSC_0795_zpstp1yxkgn.jpg

Hmmm. It's rare that I don't immediately think of a candidate for a thread question, but I'm having a hard time coming up with one I think is "silly" in any fashion. I've had some silly guns (NAA .22WMR springs to mind), but can't really think of anything else at the moment.

Unless you include the black powder revolvers, which really have no purpose other than bringing a smile to my face ...

20180819_071853.jpg I decided a while back to not expand on calibers. I also decided that I had a sufficient number of firearms , and that I should focus on shooting more and detailing my favorites to my liking , rather than procure.
Very sensible.
Now I own a S&W model 1903 in .32 long , even bought a couple hundred rounds of ammunition for it.
It was a silly acquisition , but I couldn't help it.

My Aussi No.1 MkIII* SMLE was an impulse buy over 25 years ago (because it was a real bargain). It’s the only “military” rifle I own, and I haven’t shot it in over 15 years. I loaded it exclusively with cast bullets and used it for Alaskan grouse a couple years until my vision got too poor for irons, small targets and poor light. And, it is pretty darned heavy for a small game rifle. It may be one of the finest battle rifles ever designed, but for me it might be considered as “silly”.

Picked one up last year that is definitely silly for a guy in his late 60's.... A Savage rascal. But it was on sale and also had a $50. mail-in rebate from Savage so I couldn't resist...Got it so one of my step-grand daughters would have something a little more her size. Now she's already big enough to prefer my CZ-455 but myself and a few other grandfathers have a ball shooting that little Rascal. I've gotta get some pictures of the old timers & the Rascal. It's a darn good shooter and even has an Accutrigger that breaks cleanly at 2 lbs. 11 oz. on a Lyman digital gauge. Maybe it's not so silly because we have so much fun with it. Here's she is with both the Rascal and the CZ-455. IMG_2022.JPG IMG_2026.JPG

Kel Tec PMR pistol and CMR carbine. About ten years ago I read a series of zombie books that featured a PMR 30 with the 30 round mags that one of the survivors used. I had never heard of such a pistol and when one came into my LGS I got the call. I added the CMR carbine about two years ago. Silly? I guess, but they are a hoot to shoot. The PMR is fitted with a Burris Fast Fire 3 and I Protec light. The carbine has the the stock flip up sights and a XTS flashlight vertical fore grip.

Next up. The Shockwave 12 gauge. I always wanted a stubby pump so when they became legal here I bit. Silly? You bet. I also bought the adapter and five boxes of mini shells. I planned on keeping this for range use only but after feeding #4 buckshot through it I saw the potential as a home defense weapon. It is now fitted with an I Protec light on the top rail and resides on my night stand. BTW the mini shells are, IMO, more of a novelty than something you would use for self defense.

Last up. My FN 5.7. Why? Because I felt like it. It's an awesome pistol and I love the ooh's and ahh's I get at the range.

Hmm, I think I have a pair. My itty-bitty Beretta .25acp (which was just too good a deal not to buy on sale, many years ago). It counts as pretty silly in nearly every measure. Including the tip-up barrel.

The other would be the .22lr shaped like an AK. I have plenty of .22s, don't really need another, but, it's fun, if silly.

I almost picked up a .22lr STG-44, but the silliness stopped me [:)]

Are you referring to the Mitchell Arms .22 AK? I always thought those were pretty cool and surprisingly well built.

I'd much rather have one of those than the GSG STG44 or MP22. Ive seen some of those zamak wonders oxidizing badly!

Let's see if this shows up.

Charter Arms, AR-7 Explorer II pistol.
I added a laser sight clamped to the scope tube for close shots which matches pistol scope zero at 25 yards. Got two magazines (one carried in grip). Feeds, functions and groups well with .22 CCI MiniMag 40gr copperplate roundnose.
My Ruger Mark II is more practical but less space gun silly.

OK, this is one that's over the top. Too bad there is no money on this "silly piece" thread. Here it comes. I traded into a T/C Dimension. What caliber? 300 Win Mag-as if I needed another magnum rifle. This thing has grown on me. This weird looking rifle will out shoot most any comparable rifle here on the hill. I cannot find anybody in American who owns having a Dimension let alone shooting one. I started a lie that it's a CIA issue and aboard all black helicopters.

#40 CapnMac: There are elderly people living in dangerous areas who can load and fire a .25 ACP with tip-up barrel but don't have the strength to operate a slide. Wouldn't seem so silly to them.

Desert eagle 357 giant heavy low capacity but it is a soft shooter and probably my most accurate gun I really love shooting it
Yes, mine was one of my favorite toys but when rent had to be paid it had to go since it had no real practical role. I’ll get another someday!

I consider it more sexy then silly myself. I have always wanted one, but the fun ones, semi even, are fairly spendy. So, when CDNN had these for around $300, I jumped on it. My one and only H&K MP5, made by Walther, in 22. lr. (yes, it has the faux suppressor, but so what, its still so sexy!!)

Odd looking, but not silly. I have one in 30-06. The most accurate rifle I own. The stock does look like something made by the dwarves in Lord of the Rings. I have another 30-06 barrel waiting for me to make up my mind on whether I want a 338-06 or 35 Whelen. Love that rifle, but I don't much talk about it...

The dwarves were proud craftsmen and would never make something that hideous- but Sauron could have forged it in the fires of Mt.Doom.........:D:rofl:
