Does anyone else get the urge to buy a rifle that makes no sense at all for them? I have this urge to build a 450 bushmaster. I don't know why, can't explain it, have no use for it, but I still have this urge that says build it. Anyone else deal with this?

Yes, I do that with rifles, pistols and shotguns.

Recently I found myself researching building a precision rifle in .308. I have no desire to shoot competitions. I have no easy access to a range longer than 100 yards. I wouldn’t use it to hunt. A guy st the gun store said “Why not consider the 6.5 Creedmore?” I thought for a second and said “Why am I considering this at all?”. Thanked him and left.

I get the weirdest desires sometimes.

Unless your "Thing" is to be irritatingly practical, I'm pretty sure everyone has the urge to get a gun, or something else they like, for no reason besides they want it.

Personally, nearly every firearm I own, I do because I wanted it (or it fits an idea that tickled my fancy). Otherwise I'd have 1 gun, like I did when I got out of high school.

Yes. That's why I have a .458 SOCOM built now. And now I'm looking at building a .450 BM upper. So far, no .50 Beo urges...yet.

And this is why I have my .308 exactly....and why I continue to think of a 6.5 Creedmoor as well...

Yeah, an 1886 Winchester 45-70. Doesn't make whole lot of sense for me to own one. Sense isn't something that factors in when I but a gun though. If it did, I would only own a deer rifle, a 12 gauge and a handgun. That's not as fun.

Oh, I have guns that I bought for no other reason than I wanted it and had to have it. Good examples:
Ruger PC Carbine.
Glock 45 when I had recently got a 19X
Henry AR-7, just ‘cause.

I also bought a Ruger 10/22 takedown then installed an Adaptive Tactical stock. It was cool but I figured my Grandson would think it’s even cooler. I set it aside for him for Christmas and got the Henry for me.

This^

My grandfather fed their family of ten during the depression with a cheap double barrel 12 gauge and a single shot .22.

Most of us need another gun like we need a bad rash. I have maybe a dozen guns, most of which haven’t been used in years and some never fired. My wife has closets full of clothes. Why do two people need four TVs, a 2,600 sq ft home, or five iPads and iPhones?

There are guys in third world countries that work harder than anybody here and have no idea where their next meal is coming from. We have to go to the gym to work off the extra 40 pounds we are carrying around.

We are spoiled brats that buy needless stuff simply because we want it and can afford it.

And in the words of K.C and the Sunshine Band........ahhhhhhhh, “that’s the way I like it”

Its hard for me to want something I have no use for, or have other things that will perform equally or better than that other thing.

I have a strong desire for a 300 h&h, which is almost understandable since my bro in law got one from Grandpa and I am going to load for him.
But I also want a 221 fireball just so I have a 22 mag equivalent that's reloadable. I already have a few 223 rifles that work fine for this, but I still want the fireball. And a 6x45. No practical reason ballistically since I have a Grendel bolt gun sitting in the safe. So, yeah I understand the urge to just build or own something just because...

Urge? Difficult to say. As it's been mentioned, after my first .22 LR, my twelve gauge and my .270 Winchester, and, of course, my muzzleloader, all the others were not really needed. But I bought them. Urge? Most of the time, for me, it is a rather slow process, weighting options, reading reviews and comments, and lots of Internet research. Caliber, particular gun, specific finish, et caetera, and one day, unexplainably, bang! Too late, I bought it.

Nope, never.

Firearms are tools - they solve problems.

Simple.

(My trouble is finding new problems that need solvin'.)

I have wanted to build a 458 SOCOM or 450 BM for years. I have had the uppers in my shopping cart and credit card info typed out countless times. All I needed to do was press “Order”....And I never do it. Every single time, I think about all the memories I’ve made with my leverguns and how much I enjoy them. And then I empty the cart and exit out of the website.

I have my AR-15 and AR-10. They’re great. But they just don’t have the.....character or charisma, that my other guns have. They’re just guns I know. But when I pick up my AR’s I don’t “feel” anything. They feel like tools. When I pick up my Levers, it’s like shaking hands with an old, trusted friend.

Bought an Aero M5 lower during one of the push-to-ban phases.
Already had a .308.
Didn't want to make something that took a bunch of specialised parts (magazines, bolts), so i did some research.

Built a .358 Winchester.

It's not a popular caliber. Factory loaded ammo is hard to come by sometimes, but i handload. It's a caliber best suited to big game hunting, which i don't often do. But it's unique, and powerful, and ultimately really kinda cool.
Someday i will make sure it's blooded, but right now it's just a fun but pointless thing that i take pride in having made.

That’s probably the way things ought to be. But if everyone felt like that, the american economy and particularly the sporting goods portion would nosedive

I ordered an AR10 upper and lower because I found a side charging upper just like the ones I have on my ar15’s. I would really like to get a nice match grade 338 federal barrel for it but
I’m liking the idea of breaking with my norm and just getting a 308 barrel and shooting factory fusion ammo since it’s on sale so often. With time becoming short in supply it would be nice to have a big game rifle I don’t have to handload for. All my other hunting rifles are somewhat obscure calibers or loadings.

On the other hand I’m looking really hard at also building a 358 yeti AR15 upper which is a handload only cartridge you have to form brass for.
