I've decided I want another .308 partially for hunting, partially for fun.

I decided my M1A is too heavy for walking around and i really like shooting my AR15.

So.

I have probably $1200 i can play with, I want a .308 AR10 type that's light (around 8 lb before glass) and decent. I once had a DPMS Sporter and didnt like it (too heavy) so that's out.

I've checked out a Stag 10S and a Savage MSR10, both seemed nice at the shop. I've kinda looked at an M&P 10 (have an M&P 15 that I like).

So, any suggestions, recommendations, feedback?

Thanks!

*Please note, my budget is fixed here and i am not interested in a PTR, FAL, SCAR or some other option, thanks.

Chances are that you will find the AR10 as heavy (or so close to the same weight as the M1) that it will be taken out as often as the M1.

It's possible, but my M1A starts out at almost 9 and a half pounds before I add a cheek riser, 1lb of Basset scope mount, and heavier mags.

Then the same rings and scope I already have on it.

So if the AR starts at 2lb lighter before, it will still be 2 lb lighter after. At least so I believe.

Which should put it fairly close, unloaded, to my AR15 that I really like for walkin' around

I built an Aero Precision AR10-style rifle on an 80% lower and have been pleased with it. The quality of parts surprised me a bit, to include threaded pins instead of roll pins in a few locations.
However, with an 18" barrel it is not light by any means. Not sure of the profile, but I would call it a standard/medium. A lighter profile barrel could easily shave over a pound off without sacrificing anything. With a 20 round mag it is all the rifle I would want to run around with. I'll probably ditch the red dot and add a scope and bipod, it makes more sense for the clambering anyways.

I am currently in the process of building a somewhat lightweight AR10. I say somewhat light because I'm using a fairly heavy side charging upper and billet lower, but I am putting a pretty lightweight barrel, handguard, and stock on it.

Here is a very very good deal on a fairly light AR10 barrel I found today. Use promo code BF18 to get an extra 10% off

Larue Ultimate Upper kit.

Gets you an OBR with a nicer fore grip for around your budget. You'll have to wrench it together, but that's fun as well. Nothing in your budget range is going to come close to that. if you don't have a stock pile of .308, consider the 6.5 CreedMur.

I think I'm going to pick one up again as well soon. I already have the .300blk 14" kit.

I have one made by Del-Ton. A no-frills 16" AR carbine in 308. Of course, I added a bunch of stuff to it and made it heavier, but just a scope and set of rings would have kept it very light. The trigger that came with it was awful- I replaced it with a Larue MBT, which are on sale now for $87

I should ask, are you willing to build one or do you want to buy something complete?

I keep going back and forth. Building one would be a fun project, but there is a certain appeal to a pre made. Plus the bewildering availability of parts and incompatiable styles in the .308 game is a bit intimidating.

Most of my free "gun" time is on the loading bench or the range, so time might be a problem. Plus part of my budget is a trade in that has been a PITA to sell locally.

Though I am open to all suggestions, especially recommendations on parts and sources.

Its mighty tempting, but I have a huge pile of once fire brass and some .308 dies already. Though I did scrounge a couple hundred 6.5 brass at the range... somehow.

It only takes 1 hour to build a Larue kit. And that's if you've been drinking. The gas block came assembled on my barrel. And they pre-welded my Tranquillo flash hider because it was a 14".

And it's available in 2 upper recievers. Pretty sure one of them is DPMS gen 1 compatible.

AeroM5e1 with 18" barrel , I put a discontinued Leupold 4.5-14 side adjust scope on it with Aero mount . Right at $1000 total and very accurate at 200 yards, so far . I bought lower on sale and complete upper on sale and put on my own stock and their parts kit. I honed my own trigger= great !
I just contacted Aero for you and they said they will have a Black friday sale starting sometime friday night. Get what I consider the best , the first time. Note - I DID sell my .308 barrel to a friend and put on a lighter Crierion barrel, before I fired it as my son wanted to blue print the barrel to reciever face. But the friend I sold barrel too gets less than 1" groups from it on his DPMS AR-10.

I guess I question how bad the parts compatibility issue really is. 95% of what is on the market is DPMS gen 1 pattern. If your really worried about that just get your receivers, parts kits, and BCG from one maker, like Aero.

I chose to build my own because I was looking at other stuff and found this upper

I have a thing for side charging AR's so it just made sense to complete the set

The DPMS GII’s are really hard to beat for lightweight large format AR’s.

I’m with @someguy2800 - it’s really not that difficult to identify which parts are which platform, and which are proprietary.

It kinda goes without saying, but carbon fiber wrapped barrels are out there, and are incredibly light.

I can tell you that I really like my M&P10. It is pretty darned accurate, light and reliable.
My first M&P 10 was foolishly sold. I put up a life size anatomic deer target and parked three shots in the heart at 220 yds. My current one is more accurate than that. I shoot a 150 SST handload.

I have that stock in green on my middle sons Del-Ton. But I think I'm going to change that rifle to be the exact same as the Del-Tons I "built" for his other two brothers, that way none of them can complain about the other having something they thought was better. So that means its going to be a floating part for me to use as an excuse to build something new.

What I did
index.php

I guess most of the other AR10 feel very heavy to me, especially with an 18" oror longer barrel. This one does not. They do need a trigger upgrade however. I find that to be easy enough. I like the Geisselle SSA E . Though I have tried the Warne tactical AR rings which are lighter, and slightly higher, the AD mount seems to fit it like a glove. I find that shots on moving game are easier with this rifle. For example, had a trotting coyote in the sights at about 35 yds. Would have been easy if I had remembered the safety. Dohhh!
I just realized I have replied to this thread twice. Well if yiu dangle meat in front of a dog I guess he will bite twice.

You can buy a PSA AR-10 lower for $180 and an array of complete uppers for $349-$499. Pretty inexpensive. I bought a aero M5 reciever a few weeks ago and am slowly putting it together. Either way its usually cheaper then buying complete, plus you get it exactly how you want it.
