I have been running gun and pawn shops all day looking for a older WASR AK47.
There was none to be found. Found plenty of the Npap AKs but don’t like the sights on them.
Lots of the American made ones but to me there something wrong with America making a AK.
After having no luck I found a man on armslist that had a older GP10/63 new in the box.
Guess I need to start hanging on to these things now.

They still used to be everywhere and under every rock. Think people are sitting on them now.

We have two Wasrs on the rack, didn't seem to be any difficulty getting them.
I'm not in again 'til Tuesday, but PM me if you want the contact info.

The commodity AR-15 won the war for the US market. Why pay $900-1500 for an Arsenal AK or far too much for a WASR or Bulgarian when you can get a perfectly good AR-15 under $600 in 5.56x45mm or 300 Blackout..AND...it is optics ready out of the box!

The cast trunion fiasco and other major quality issues of subpar American made ak's has driven the price of the WASR pretty high. Right now its the only thing worth buying for Under $800. All of Century's USA Builds are garbage and the issues are well documented. Folks for a while just wrote them off as budget range guns that should be ok for occasional use but even in that duty people started having them blow up or brake right on camera or eating a no go gauge right out of the box.

Century seemed to have focused on making their own in house and the importation of the wasr's seems to have slowed down because of it. There have been plenty of Companies that have tried to make them here in the states only to cut corners where you shouldn't and dropped time bombs on the Ak market. I.0 Inc's ak's were so bad they have dropped there ak line all together and have switched to just making AR's

PSA has recently released what seems to be a great entry level ak that is american made and looks to have Hammer forged everything where it is critical. https://palmettostatearmory.com/psak-47-gf3-forged-classic-polymer-rifle-5165450218.html Check out Ak operators Union on youtube, They do 5000 round test's on all sorts of ak's and really go into break downs to show what is wearing and what isnt.

Right now if you want a Decent ak under $1k your best choices is to get the wasr . Or scour the pawn shops or Auction sites for a Norinco mak 90 preferably in a straight cut receiver so you can change the furniture out to a standard ak47 set.

Slant back mak90's are just as good, just a little harder to get traditional wood to fit. Iron wood designs has wood for them though. The Mak90 is all forged, chrome lined barrel, thicker receiver, butter smooth trigger and has become a sought after AKM. These used to be $189 all day long when I was younger and now they are $1k guns and are worth it. My Father has a bone stock mak 90 from the early 90's that is outfriggen standing. I got a deal on this last year for $350.

As much as I like american gun manufactures they really dropped the ball on getting a decent entry level ak to market. There are tons of private builders that build from surplus parts kits but you are way over 1k for any of them.
Hopefully PSA gets it right with the psak-47 gen 3. If it does, I think that may bring the price of the wasr back down a bit and cause other American manufactures to step up their game and put milspec parts into their builds.

I Like ar-15s as well but I love me a good budget ak.

If you can get a good deal on a Npap I would go for it. What's wrong with the sights? Add a rail and a dot if the sights don't work for you. Atlantic Firearms just had Npaps and sold out in nothing flat.
The Pawn shops around here still think they can get $900 for AKs and $800 for a cheap AR.

Npap here are going for 600. The sights are to low and I can’t get low enough on the stock to see them.
I looked at a underfolder and the sights were higher to me but lined up way to the left. They just don’t work for me.
The older WASR AKs are going for 700

The bans have taken their toll. I’ve had my Romanian SAR-1 since 2002 which was the year they were banned from import and when you could pick up a nice AK for $250, they are crazy in price now. I’ll never sell it, nice rifle.

In the past I’ve had the sar 1-2-3 all we’re good. Haven’t seen one in a long time

I had forgot all about the Maadis. Yanno you getting old when you forget what all guns you used to own.
Been ages since I’ve seen one

People still have them and aren't really selling them. Plus they're easy to miss in the rack next to a million AR's.

The domestically made AK's just don't have the same allure as a foreign example.

Lower priced AR's (PSA, S&W, Anderson etc) took their place and they aren't imported.

what is the deal with those pawn shops ? no background check ?
you really have to be uninformed idiot to pay those prices
like going to a gun show where nasty old fart has a table with 10-15 used guns , sign "don't touch with permission" and a price tag of $399 on used SW SD9

Pawn shops in my state do a background check like any other licensed arms dealer. A waiting period applies also if you don't have a concealed license. LOL I have seen those tables also sometimes they even put a net over the guns.

On a note did informal shooting today with the SAR1 with a 8 inch steel plate gong at 100 yds, got away the bench for a change and used mostly kneeling position, there was a constant ding.....ding. On paper it averages 5 to 6 inch groups of 10 shots with standard iron sights. Not the most accurate but then again using bulk ammo is good enough for my satisfaction.

Pawn shops often give layaway terms and some do price things too high to bargain with tradeins. Most will negotiate and you need to learn the pawnbroker's code for what they have in it. Helps in bargaining.

BTW, all pawnbrokers do have FFL licenses and yes are required to do forms 4473's just like any other FFL dealer.
