thanks everyone. I know that just about anything out of a 30-06 will take down a deer. for something interesting to do this spring I am just wanting to work up a handload that is as accurate as possible in my gun and at least in the back of me head I can think "I can use this on anything on this continent"

180 grain pills work pretty well for me. They give me the best groups on a target. But that's just me.

The ole girl... caresses.

Nice choice of photos... your rifle or just representative?

My Granddaddy wasn't a deer hunter... he spent some time in the Philippines as an infantryman. He was a BARman who liked the M1 better and told me how good it was... said there's nothing obsolete about it. Over the last few years, I've heard from some guys who have shot deer with their M1's, but you have to be aware of your state game laws (bullet type to be deer-legal) and your handloading choices (right powder for the gas system).

My shooter.

Use 168 gr. Barnes copper TSX and a 5-round clip, and install a Garand Gear "Ported Gas Plug" to mitigate any excess pressure.

Shoots well inside of 3 MOA, so I can hit just about anything with it that I can see.

Hornady, Sierra, Norma, Nosler..., etc....

I think that if the manufacturers are recommending X bullet for deer, then the question becomes NOT the bullet, but what does the bullet do from your rifle at Y distance, with the powder load that you're using in your handloads? After all, the manufacturers have spent a lot of money and time doing a boat-load of research so that their product does the job as expected. This is especially true these days as it takes mere hours for a large amount of negative advertising to be generated on the internet, and "word of mouth" is now electronic. So they all make darn sure their product isn't going to fail, providing the handloader does the job and ensures the rest of the components are in a proper condition and powder is used in the proper amount. So your concerns I think are finding the right load for your rifle and your needs, and ensuring your loads are consistent from round to round.

So, take a clay bird at 100yds and consider the middle 3".

If I understand right, Georgia doesn't restrict a rifle's capacity like they restrict a shotgun to 5rds. Kinda odd, I thought.

At one time, I thought about a adjustable gas plug. I was thinking of Schuster and another brand I recall Midway carrying. Never got around to it. I don't recall hearing of the Garand Gear until now.

+1
I've never shot a white tail (they're few and far between around here) but I lost track a long time ago of how many mule deer have fallen to my 30-06 with regular, ol' Hornady 165gr BTSPs - over a charge of IMR 4350 that yields a little better than 2800fps at the muzzle.:)

I used the same bullet over 48.5 gr if IMR 4064. I killed a lot of deer with it.

IMG_2991.JPG ......... Nosler .30 cal. 150 gr. Accubond works well on deer sized game. My only .30-06 is my M-1 and when I decided to work up a deer load the 150 gr. Accubond shot very well and I went with a standard M-1 load using IMR-4895 and just substituted an Accubond for the 150 gr. FMJ.. They chronograph just under 2600 fps. Picked up a few 5 round clips and I'm legal in the rifle zones I hunt. Would like to post a picture of my M-1 with a deer taken with it but I'm still working on that idea. My usual deer cartridges are .30-30 & 6.5x55 but I should get the M-1 out more often. So far I haven't even pointed it at a deer yet. If that day ever comes a 30 cal. 150 gr. Accubond should be able to handle it, and like a Barnes copper TSX bullet I won't have to worry about an exposed lead tip of a bullet getting deformed by the feed ramp.

My father used a 24" sporterized Springfield with a Bear Cub 4X scope. He loaded the old-days 150-grain Hornady Spire Point to GI specs, so a muzzle velocity around 2,700 or at most 2,800.

Witnesses spoke of two of his kills at some 500 yards.

You don't need super potency if you can dope the wind and know your trajectory.
