I wonder if more and more people are getting fed up with crimina behavior and the cops having their hands tied. Maybe we'll see more vigilantism. A few problems here though, no need to attempt to stop them, no reason to shoot, and leaving the scene after the shooting.

Reminded me of a scene from the newer film "Hell or Highwater" when the townspeople chase the bankrobbers and shoot at them. I said that'd never happen in real life, guess I was wrong.

This follows a Marine Corps saying, "Good initiative, poor judgement."

The plan was to steal tools. Then customers drew their guns

Marysville police are asking for the people who shot at the getaway car to come forward.

MARYSVILLE — The plan was simple: Steal tools and pawn them for money.

That’s what two men, 22 and 23, reportedly had in mind when they showed up to the Coastal Farm & Ranch store in Marysville on Saturday afternoon, according to a police report. They allegedly took four nail guns, each worth over $400, walked out of the store and got into a Honda Civic.

They didn’t expect to be surrounded by about six customers with guns raised.

For this I'm sure the police will check for security camera footage

They might go above and beyond to nail “good guys”. If it was “just a theft” they wouldn’t even want a glance at surveillance video.

It’s not a fun thing to think about but they don’t care a lot about retail theft. Other things cause more damage to society or make more money in fines for the department. Sad to think that you not rocking backwards at a stop sign and rolling through, is something that will be focused on but that provides resources vs consuming them.

Their only possible excuse could be they were concerned the thieves were gonna run over and maim or kill the “blocker” on the hood

One customer was standing in front of the car, yelling at the alleged thieves to get out.

“He won’t shoot, run him over,” one of the suspects reportedly said.

The driver pulled forward, causing the man confronting him to land on the hood, court papers say.

Even a sorry defense lawyer would tell the jury that had a curb weight of +/- 3000 lbs could kill anyone and the man that landed on the hood is lucky to be alive when confronted with such a deadly device (look at how many people get killed by them each year by accident) that had been turned into a weapon intentionally.

Another customer shot at the driver’s side front tire, according to documents. A third fired twice at the rear tire.

Both with great restraint do to the seriousness of the situation.

Sounds almost like Joe Biden himself firing a shotgun in the air, who could go for a conviction at that point?

This is why I question the real effectiveness of security cameras.

Even of you get perfect images of the person robbing tour home or business will the police actually do anything with them?

NYC, Chicago, London etc have cameras everywhere, yet that does not deter muggings, purse snatching, burglaries etc

They will be much more likely to if they kill you or your employees.

sounds like they didn't shoot until the thief actually rammed one with their car. I think in all US states thats grounds for deadly force, I know it is in WA where this took place. Big question, was shoplifting a valid reason to chase someone to a parking lot? Group panic is an ugly thing. FWIW https://app.leg.wa.gov/rcw/default.aspx?cite=9A.16.020

Repeated observed reality tells me if the perpetrators had been shot while trying to carve one of the patrons up with a chainsaw, some snowflake somewhere would whine about it, the way an idiot admin employee of Ohio State did about the killing of the recent "car and knife" jihadi.

While I don't advocate shooting people for theft (as opposed to robbery), the escalating deference toward criminals, especially violent criminals, is creating a backlash. Compassion fatigue is setting in. I can feel sorry for kidnapped school girls in Africa or for thieves, but not BOTH. The girls are always going to win that contest.

“Anytime you’re firing a weapon in a public place, especially a few days before Christmas in a crowded parking lot, it is a grave concern,” Thomas said.

Sorry to be a buzzkill, but if some kid got shot by a stray bullet on Xmas because these yahoos want to wave their guns around I’d be totally ok with putting those vigilantes in jail.

I see no reason for any civilian to draw their firearm in that article. If you ain’t got what it takes to tackle the the thief then just take a picture of them and their Plates and give it to the cops.

If the perps were armed it would be a different story.

There does seem to be a trend to lower punishments for many crimes. In Austin you get a ticket to appear for shoplifting instead of getting arrested. In CA if you steal a poor family's junk heap of a car its no longer grand theft auto. And on and on.

Its like they saw a documentary on crime in NYC from the 60's and 70's and thought that was a great time to be alive

Problem is the people shop lifting anything will very likely try to beat you senseless if you try to stop them.

That's why big box stores don't let regular employees interfere with shop lifters

Security footage on it's own isn't very helpful unless someone, either the police or public, is able to recognize the individuals and provide some information to follow up with.

Shooting at anyone in the heat/ anger of the moment to protect “things” is very, very reckless - cavemen/ primals with guns! Pulling that piece for any other reason than to protect life/ limb is just craziness - you are begging for legal retaliation and you deserve it - shame, shame!
