We were actually doe hunting this morning and had spotted a gorgeous mature mule deer buck. While watching him I noticed a coyote milling around.

I lip squeaked him in from about 500 yards to 246 yards. The kidlet hit him with her new Steyr Scout chambered in 6.5 CM. He was facing us and she hit him in the upper chest killing him instantly with a 129 Gr Accubond Long Range bullet.

First blood for what is sure to be the first of many. Now to see if we can find a doe or two this afternoon. :)

Good job for the both of you. Good shootin' and good calling. Doubt very much iffin a 'yote would hear my lip squeaks @ 500 yards!

Nicely done!

We've had several healthy looking coyotes roaming the place lately. Nailed one with Jimmy's Ruger #1 in 22-250 a couple of weeks ago. I'm trying to save the next shot for him, but they seem to know they're pretty safe with the grey haired old guy at home, but they don't show themselves when Jimmy's at home.

I’ve been playing with lip squeaks on coyotes for a bit now. I’ve had them respond from as far away as 800 yards lazed as long as the wind is calm.

I’ve figured out that coyotes have incredible hearing.

BTW if you put two fingers on your lips as you “kiss” it magnifies the sound.

I'm sure she would have enjoyed the broken nose and concussion though. lol

That is excellent shooting on her part and a very nice rifle. Jeff Cooper would give two thumbs up. :D

We’ve got three Steyr Scouts in the family now. They are an acquired taste in the appearance department. But once you spen some time behind one on the range and the in the field they become a very hard rifle not to pick up when it’s time to go shoot something. The ergonomics, shootability and ease of carry are incredibly good on these rifles.

I think if I were to set up a scout rifle, I'd probably have a hard time finding a scope bright enough to suit me. I like at LEAST a 40mm objective and most of the scout scopes I've seen, at best, are 32mm. With the right optic, they could work, though.

And if you notice the picture above that rifle does not have a scout scope on it. While a forward mounted scout scope does have a slight speed advantage. IMHO and after thousands of rounds and hundreds of critters shot with a proper forward mounted scout scope. A low power variable does not give up enough in speed and offers so much more as an optic that I’ve equipped all of our Styers with conventional low power variables. The rifle shown above is topped with a Ziess HD-5 2x10x42.

That turns a Steyr into a very good snap shooting rifle, and a fantastic long range rifle. And you still get ten rounds carried on board in two magazines, a three point shooting sling, and integral folding bipod, one of the nicest triggers in the industry, .5 MOA accuracy in a short and easy to carry package.

The only thing you are giving up is a slight advantage in snap shots and a little bit of extra weight. IMHO it makes a scout rifle a better all around package.

Well done! Congratulations to the young lady.

The Steyr in 6.5 Creedmoor is an interesting concept. I've shot one in .308 and thought 7mm-08 would be better suited. That 6.5 should prove very handy.

Think they are making a run in 7MM-08 this year too.

Beautiful country and with Mule Deer around you must be out west somewhere, what state?

Great deal.

One of my friends has a couple year old unfired Steyr in 6.5 that he would sell. I assume it’s a 6.5x55. Dunno. Interesting but I’ve got a 7 Mag so I’m not sure it would do anything the 7 can’t.
