Some of you have seen this revolver I picked up about a year ago. It's a S&W 500 mag, designed by 500mag aficionado, John Ross and built by the S&W performance center. Since S&W will build you any gun, but requires a minimum quantity of 500, there were exactly 500 produced. 250 in satin stainless and 250 in black oxide with a stainless cylinder. Mine is stainless and has a SN of 002X. I'd venture to say my box of 20 rounds was only second box its shot.

The gun has quite an interesting backstory, having been pawned not once, but twice.

It's a 5" barrel, with external muzzle nut and no compensator. The nut brings the cylinder gap to about .004", raising velocity about 100fps. It's a bear to shoot, but fun. I have no real need for it, as there aren't bears in KS anymore. With older, standard ear muffs the blast and concussion aren't all that bad. Shooting it the other day, we compared it with a 45acp. Both were shot into the side of an old home hvac unit. They both left 5/8" holes in the case, and the 45 penetrated 2 stainless burners. The 500 left a slightly bigger hole, but penetrated 5 stainless burners.

Here it is next to a Interarms 44mag Virginia dragoon.

Anyone have an idea of its value? New they were about $1400, and I've seen them selling for $2000+. I'm contemplating selling it to fund a 32-20 colt pistol to match my 1873 32-20 rifle.

I thought they were still avail from John Ross. IIRC (no guarantees) a couple of guys bought them directly from John within the last year (I think Michael Bane was one).

FWIW,

Paul

Michael did get one from John Ross recently.

I bought mine directly from him, this was roughly 6 years ago. Also stainless satin. Mine had some issues which were worked out when I sent it to S&W. It is VERY accurate, and not as bad on the recoil as I expected although I have never used bullets heavier than 450grain under a full charge of 300MP. If he is still selling them it has taken him a LONG time to clear out 500 guns. Once they are all snatched up I would expect the value to go up quite a bit. Just like the PC 500 Bone Collector version. When they were still available I could have snatched one up for $1000. Wish I had. Last one I saw went for over $1400 I would hang onto it for a while.

Hmm that is interesting. I figured they all got snatched up.

They are very accurate, once you put that big muzzle blast out of your head. The first outing with it was not nearly as fun as the second.

I found an old 32-20 I'm going to look at today, that wont require mortgaging the house.

I got one from John early on. Fun to play with. Much quieter than my 4" with comp. I did need a taller front sight, though. I confess I see no need to load it hot.

I found a 32-20 for cheap enough on Saturday. The JRC will be staying in my safe lol. I do reload, so some "500 specials" will be worked up too. I agree, no need to load to max hotness

I really don't find it all that bad too shoot, other than I need a set of gloves. The kick doesn't hurt my arm or wrist, just the palm of my hand. Plus, who doesn't like throwing half inch lead downrange!?

That's been my experience. I bought a pair of shooting gloves for that very reason. My favorite load for more than a couple cylinders full has been one I worked up with trail boss and some custom higher BC 400 grain cast bullets I make. You could call it a 500 special load but it still lets you know you fired it!

I find bike gloves work well for me. Just a bit of padding to mitigate the sting.

I wonder if he is still doing it. I know he has run into health issues the last few years. Hope he is OK.

I found his # in an old gunblast article. You might try it;

I bought a JRC from John years back but, haven't seen any posts from him over on
S&W forums in some time? Hope John is well and everything is alright with him?
