Stopping a Nilgai

I shot this eland with cz-550 in .375 H&H in Africa and the same rule goes if you wound it you bought it, so I opted to use the .375 so even with a marginal hit I had better chance of getting it. this eland was shot very close(maybe 60-70 yards) in heavy brush and I was glad I had chosen the 375.

It looks like a neck shot? That should stop him pretty good.

I bought a .375 H&H when I returned from Africa. After shooting it a dozen times, I put it away .. too much gun for me. If I used it, I would flinch and wound something with it. I could do much better with a 7x57 and premium bullets.

Well, I've thought about buying a .338 barrel for the Savage to replace the 7mm barrel. I could buy a go/no go headspace gauge set and a barrel nut wrench and swap back if I wanted. But, really, I hate to mess with what works for me and I really don't have much use for a .338 except if I ever went after a Nilgai.....which I really think the 7mm is plenty of gun for regardless of what ranch managers think.

Swapping barrels isn’t going to help the original issue.

So, my preacher wants to leave this week on a Nilgai hunt. His .300 Win Mag needs sighting in, but there's no time.

That issue can be addressed though.

FWIW most “travel” hunts I have been on always have an opportunity of confirming zero and some even required it.

Well, Brother James sent me a text just now with a pic of his kill. It DOES look like a horse. LOL! So, the 7 worked. I'll get details later, no doubt. :D

least let me know which ranch/outfitter.

Here's the pic of the result. :D He said it was a quartering shot from about 150 yards, in the neck, out the left shoulder. So, don't let 'em mess with ya, 7 mag can do it. :D

Heck, I knew this guy at work that outlawed nilgai on the Kennedy, used a 6mm because it made less noise. I wonder if that idiot is still out of prison. :scrutiny: His boy did time, I know, for hunting the dunes on the Padre Island Nat'l Seashore. Like father, like son I guess.

I was just down in that area, and saw an article in the paper that they killed 82 Nilgai in a depredation hunt.

Anyone have an opinion on how they taste? Supposed to be good.

Ate some last week and I would put the flavor somewhere between beef and venison. Very good.

Pastor James called just now. He couldn't remember the name of the ranch, said it was some Spanish name. He said he has all the details and will get it to me with the details on that Davis mountain ranch where the elk are. He shot this thing near Lampasas, Texas west of Kileen/Temple area for those who've spent time at Ft Hood. :D He said they're wary as heck. They drove around and saw a few, but they were small and would take off. He ended up hunting a blind on a trail between feeding and bedding areas. He says they ignore feeders, though he did see a small one eat alfalfa pellets out of a cattle feeder. Was tough hunting, but he got lucky.

He said they didn't weigh it, but that the ranch's cleaning station was a 12 ft A frame. They hooked come alongs on either side of it and when the hocks were even with the top of the A frame, the nose was almost touching the ground. The guy doing the skinning used a ladder.:D He says the meat is still aging in the coolers and he'll get it to a butcher soon.

I have to go in for a church board meeting tomorrow morning, so I reckon I'll get the skinny on the ranch and post it later when we get home. Gotta get my rifle back, too.

double lung worked on this one.

And every other species from Africa, except for big cats. Barbary sheep included. Which is why there is a hard to kill myth about them too.

Ive been killing hard to kill animals decisively with revolvers for awhile now. Its amazing how well they go down with “underpowered” guns when hit with premo bullets in the right place!! My daughter has killed a few gemsbok and a couple scimitar horned oryx with.......a 243. Shes accurate and uses barnes bullets. I still think the nilgai being very wary and skittish cause some bad shots to be taken and bad hits = tough.
