They work fine, but they are inelegant and to my eye

The big game isn't any dead-er when you look good. :D

I use a rifleman's bag, as my most used rifle is a single shot flintlock. I also have some handi-rifles and I agree with a previous post that a belt pouch that covers the ammo is the ticket.

These when properly greased against bad weather, keep the ammunition clean, but handy.

Hey Folks! When you put a cartridge "saddle" on your rifle, it does not protect the cartridges from the elements, or from debris as you move through the brush. (Of course if you've never fallen in the woods nor gotten mud on your rifle, then disregard this)

IF such a saddle is in contact with the metal of your rifle in either the action or the barrel, and if it's made of cloth, it holds moisture against the steel, and if waterproofed or synthetic, it holds moisture between it and the steel against the steel. IF it's leather, the leather has probably been tanned with an acid, so you're holding moisture with added acid against your barrel. Unless the leather is greased, and then, like the synthetic saddle, it holds water between it and the steel, against the steel. Everybody say "Rust!" ;)
