Good. The 2nd Amendment is our permit to carry.

No other individual right makes you get a permit to exercise it.

In case you were wondering:

There are currently 12 states that allow permit-less carry: Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Dakota, West Virginia, Wyoming, and Vermont. That number will rise to at least 13 with South Dakota, and could further increase to include Texas, Oklahoma, and Iowa, all three of which are witnessing efforts to repeal permit requirements in their respective states.

It's my understanding that permits will continue to be available, for precisely that reason.

SD carry permits require no proficiency training or testing, so reciprocity isn't widespread. Many here take classes for Utah permits, which are a bit more challenging and consequently accepted by more states.

They should still have a voluntary permit for reciprocity reasons. Just being practical when you travel.

Permits will still be available for travelers, same as in Wyoming and other constitutional carry states.

The standard SD permit is good in 32 states. One can enter a sheriffs office, fill out the form, and the form is copied and handed back to you as your temporary permit, which is good until your permanent one shows up in the mail. It is nondescript, does not require a photo, and costs $10.

There is also a SD enhanced permit that requires a certification class, and 98 rounds of ammunition be fired in a practical shooting portion of the class. Then the applicant must apply and it costs $110. That enhanced permit will also get you a unique identifying number which should help eliminate any delays in the instant background check process. This permit is good in 39 states.

The non-resident Utah permit is recognized in 33 states but I believe some states will require you to have a current permit from your home state in conjunction. I may not be right about that.

There is nothing challenging about the class needed for the Utah permit. It is a legal based class that covers basic firearm safety. Cartridge choice is discussed as well as castle doctrines, protection of property, and a few other basic ideas. If I had to describe it, it is a CYA requirement by the state of Utah. there is no required shooting exercise.

OK, I've got to ask: how did the figure of 98 rounds come to be?

Just pointing out that VT is the one state that doesn’t issue any permits at all , so we are at a disadvantage traveling outside VT

Great news among all the turmoil we face today. With 13 states adopting Constitutional Carry, that makes 26% of the USA where a permit to carry is not needed. If more states are added it gives our side that much more strength and momentum. Don't forget about Montana, where a permit to carry is not needed outside cities and towns. I don't recall where Arkansas wound up in regards to permitless carry since it has been bounced around by different rulings by the state AG.

I don’t know about that, but we don’t have a permit to be reciprocated.
I know MA offers a non resident permit but it’s crazy expensive and never heard of anyone getting one.

And just in case you didn’t realize , neither of those states are next door

I just checked UT web page and they require you to have a permit from your reciprocating state.
So no, we can’t get one.
