Help - I'm a "Fudd"

I don't believe you are a FUDD. I think you should own, shoot enjoy what you like. While my tastes might be a little more varied I think bolt action rifles & revolvers are cool. I own one 1911 & one revolver. Of the few handguns I own I think they are the best. However I find myself carrying & shooting something plastic & striker fired the most. Isn't life ironic. Oh & if you think you might like a 1911 you probably would. Their ergonomics are wonderful. My SR 1911 makes me look like I know how to shoot.

As for 6.5 Grendel I have read about that round & it sounds really neat & interesting I just don't think I really have a purpose for it & don't want to spend the cash to get into it. Is it available in a platform other than the AR?
Get a Grendel in a ruger American, cz 527, or some other platform like an ak if you don't like ars. I'd love an sks in 6.5 Grendel...

To the OP, definitely you are not a fudd, but if you decide to go with an NFA toy a 1911 would be really cool with a suppressor. Or a short barreled Thompson to go with the 1911...

I own 5 semi's handguns, one custom 22-250 with a hand carved wood stock, a 16 ga. over under (Ranger), a Henry .22, and a Gameo air rifle .177 cal. Where do I fit?

Buy another 1911. Spray it matte black with a rattle can. Write "Xtreme" on it with some red nail varnish. Wear one of those drop leg holsters with "tactical" on it somewhere. No more Fudd. Now Tommy Tacticool.

Solved. You're welcome.

I own a typewriter. I don't own a laptop. I don't want a laptop. I have an eye phone but wish that I did not. I forget to bring it with me when I leave the house as often as possible.

I didn’t know the typewriter I learned on in high school could connect to the internet.

You are NOT a Fudd. A Fudd believes that no one should own "those black plastic rifles" because "everyone knows you can't hunt with them anyway" and also that the Democrats are not out to eliminate ALL firearms ownership. "They'd never take my .30-30, .38, and 12 gauge pump"

My thoughts exactly. Fudds don't care about my 2A rights unless they perfectly align with theirs. I have no use for a lot of different guns but I will defend your right to own what you want even if I don't see a good reason to own it. Read bump stocks, $5000. trap guns, Glocks, derringers, etc.

As the old maid said when she kissed the cow, to each their own. I prefer a bolt action to a semi-automatic and a lever action to a bolt. I have two semi-automatic handguns and both are designs from far before I was even born. My all time favorite cartridge is the 32-20 which just barely made the transition from black powder to smokeless. My preferences do not in any way shape or form make me right and someone else wrong it just makes me a happier person than they are.

I have only heard this term “Fudd” here on this forum but I only frequent 2 firearms forums.

What is a Fudd? I see a coupe of descriptions here.

Fudd is an entertaining cartoon character. I doubt that is what is meant here.

It's actually derived from same:

Note his armament.

I've seen Fudd used as a derogatory term for people who think that everyone else should eschew more modern or tactical firearms. A lot of hunters are dismissive of people who hunt with ARs, for example. Jim Zumbo is a famous example.

As has basically been covered, "FUDD" is a mindset/philosophy, not defined by your personal collection. If you don't believe others should own the "evil black rifles or, worse, collaborate with the enemy who promises to leave the hunting guns alone, you're a FUDD. If you just don't own EBRs but also don't begrudge those who do, then you're simply more traditional in your tastes.

Personally, I like them all. I collect everything from antiques like my S&W model 1 and IJ top breaks, pre-1900 milsurps, early 20th leverguns, reproduction black powder guns & conversion revolvers up to fully modernized ARs, plastic fantastic pistols with mini reflex sights, and other curious things like the Kel Tec CMR 30. I have shotguns ranging from my 1878 LC Smith Hammer Double 10 ga to my Remington 11-87 Police. I've got modern stainless unfluted cylinder revolver as well as classic deep polished blue critters with wood grips.

Is there something I can acquire to hide my Fuddness? Do I have to spend as much as a SCAR, MPX Rattler, MP5 or an NFA accessory?

Hunting type bolt guns don't preclude NFA accessories.

When I look at AR's, I'm kind of more attracted to Mini-14's.

Forget the aesthetics. The attraction of the AR is in it's utility. Get out there and actually play with a few variations, and compare them to the mini 14. My money is on you favoring the AR afterward.

One's own preference in firearms has nuttin' to do with being a Fudd. Telling others what firearms/firearm accessories they don't need is what makes one a Fudd. The amount of real Fudds in this world are relatively small compared to what some gun nuts want us to believe. IMHO, they are Fudds too, since they tend to belittle those who don't own EBRs and 30 round mags.

I’m a closet Fudd too. It’s a tough world to live in for Fudds.

I live in Massachusetts so our laws make it tough as it is. Whenever I feel like buying a new gun I ogle the blued revolvers and vintage sxs shotguns. I always have a creeping fear though that if I don’t use the money I’ve saved up and limited space for something semiautomatic that has detachable magazines I’ll never be able to get it again. About a year before the AR15 hammer dropped I bought an Anderson lower for $60. I passed on the 2 for $100 deal the shop was offering and I can’t quite shake that feeing of regret and the thought of “I’ll come back and get another when I have a real plan for a build.” It was not to be, and now Anderson lowers got for 10x that.

The fuddiest guns I own are a Mosin and 1858 Remington. I want to add a blued steel revolver, a NAA mini, a sxs or single shot 12ga, another black powder option to the collection, and maybe more, but it’s hard not to invest limited resources in another Glock, or Kel-Tec rifle, or even a P226 style pistol...

This state can be frustrating to live in.

I am a closet fudd in my mid 30s. I even used to act like one, but have since seen the light. I still prefer my revolvers, 1911s, beautiful blued and wooded bolt actions and lever actions, but actually own a lot more semi auto rifles and shotguns now. My recommendation is do what you do, and just appreciate that we are all on the same side. I still wouldn't be caught dead with a plastic framed handgun, but would fight to the death for your right to have one, right along side you, you with your Glock and AR15, me with my M1 Garand and model 27. Still brothers in arms.

Fudd-ness (I don't like the term) is not about whether you like black rifles. It is about what "I have" being acceptable and what "anybody else" has being unnecessary (If it is different from mine) and I don't care if they can't have it.

^^^^^^THIS

By this statement you are not a Fudd. Like was said previously Fudds are people who are only willing to fight for the preservation of their ideal firearms. They are the persons who say we should only be able to own x and not y when it comes to legally and constitutionally protected firearms. They deserve the title in every way as they are weak, self serving and wolves in sheep’s clothing. Plain and simple, I don’t hear anyone in this thread that is describing themselves as a true ‘Fudd’. Bill Ruger showed his Fuddness side when he made his deal with the other side.

Just because someone doesn’t like ARs or plastic handguns, but still supports others right to own those makes them principled and patriotic all the while maintaining their preferences.

I've watched the progression of the term Fudd from the start.

You are a Fudd of you think that it would be okay for your government to ban or confiscate firearms that you don't have a particular desire or use for, regardless of what your fellow gun owners might want or think.

My uncle is a Fudd. He was in the U.S. Army. He shoots trap and hunts ducks, geese, and deer. He doesn't think that anybody needs a AR because those should be "for the military" and "why does anyone else need one".

Basically, Fudds are self-centered jerks that would generally throw their fellows under the bus as long as government doesn't come after them.

Don't be a Fudd.

You can like firearms with wood stocks and blued steel. That just means that your tastes are more towards traditional aesthetics. There is nothing wrong with that.

Thank you all for your “Fudd” definitions.
Thankfully, I am not a “Fudd” and, as it turns out, really dislike Fudds and have known many. I didn’t call them “Fudds”. I have another name for them that isn’t appropriate here.

Labnoti, I did not mean to hi-jack your thread. It seems to me that you are not a Fudd. You just have a taste for nostalgia and older style firearms. There’s no disgrace in that. :)

I have always been a live and let live type when it comes to firearms. Like Armored Farmer, I didn’t have any interest in AR’s until I bought one. So far I have owned four and still have one. I also love my Cowboy guns, my S&W revolvers and my Glocks.

I celebrate diversity! Hahaha

Owning a laptop doesn't mean you can't own a typewriter.

I'm with Deanimator here. I span from fuddy-duddy to geek but draw the line at tacticool.

I crave a Winslow bolt action and a Crusader revolver, but also want a .350 AR.

I'm not Fudd in the sense that I fully support the 2nd.
