Best Glock for Range use and Occasional Carry ?

For a duty pistol I can understand wanting a larger grip and longer barrel, and for a dedicated carry pistol I can understand wanting something narrower/smaller, but for an all around civilian pistol the 19 size seems like the sweet spot to me

I don't get it though? Your saying the same thing I'm saying, after saying the opposite. Not arguing just curious. Your saying....

The full size is a better duty gun
The compact is a better carry gun
So I'll get one in the middle and get a gun that doesn't carry as well as a sub compact nor does it shoot as easily as a full size.

I have all three sizes but it Seems like saying
A prius will get me 50+ miles per gallon, very slowly. But I love that mileage and passing up gas stations (slowly)
A mustang gt or Camaro v8 will have 400+ hp but only get me 18 mpg.(don't believe the high numbers on the window sticker my 5 spd gets 18-20) But I love that power
I think I'll buy a 6cyl 3.5l challenger and get neither of the things I love. I'll "compromise" by giving up both things I want and get both the downsides. 22 mpg..... slowly. Just my opinion though.

I've even seen police carry a 19/23. To each their own and I certainly wouldn't feel at a disadvantage with either. But to be honest my 23 and my 29 (which is close to the 23/19 size although it's listed as sub compact) havent been took out of the safe in 10-15 years I'd guess. If I'm target shooting I grab the full size. If I'm carrying in the summer (and most any other season) I carry the 27. Even if I'm carrying under a winter coat I grab a full size.

The 19x baffles me all together. Why not buy a 19 and use 17 mags with an adapter when u want a 17 size frame. Using the 19 frame and a 17 slide I could understand since the grip is what usually proves hard to conceal. The frame is what prints in every carry position I know of except horizontal shoulder holsters. Why give up that fraction of sight radius and barrel and keep the part that prints? Idk.

I read somewhere that the short barrel and long grip Glocks were targeted at law enforcement who prefer the shorter barrel because it's more comfortable while seated with the gun in a holster but still offers the full grip and higher round count.

As to the rest of your post...really it's all compromise and we all have opinions about which ones to make. Your 27 is the Challenger in your analogy above when compared to a 43 or 19.

I'll agree with that. I'd carry the smaller ones but anything smaller than the 27 gets completely lost in my big hands. Anyone with basketball palming hands will likely agree. But I'd gladly carry a smaller gun if I smaller hands or they fit better.

And I can see that point about the 19x assuming the holster wasn't the same size as the 17/22. Then you aren't gaining anything as that is what is hitting, Mitt the gun itself. But I hadn't thought of that. Still.... one could use an adapter with full size mags in the 19 and accomplish the same thing. Every police trade in I have (and ive got quite a few) has scratching more around the grip and the baseplate from the seat belt latch. All my friends in LE (save for one state trooper, that carries a sig) carry a glock 21 as that and a 19 are all that is currently allowed here. No idea who picked those two

Any of these? Presently I only have a 34 and a 26.
The 19 would be my recommendation. Small enough for occasional carry, large enough for range fun.

The 17L with the 16" barrel is my every day EDC.

Tell your buddy to get a $50 conversion barrel from bearcreek and call it a day. If he wants the same controls and feel, he may as well just use the same gun. The bear creek barrel are awesome, I’ve got 2 both have worked perfectly. Others (that cost double) weren’t quite machined right and caused all sorts of issues. If he wants an excuse to buy a new gun - have at it!! However he should get the same generation he carries on duty so that the grip and trigger are the same.

I 100% agree w crestoncowboy re the 19x - there is no point in a longer grip. G17 mags work perfectly well in a g19.3/4, only a dilettante would object to the look of a mag sticking out a bit. I actually prefer g17 mags in a g19 since the mag baseplate can’t pinch your hand when you slam in a fresh mag. If you want to use a shorter mag for concealment you can.

I have a Glock 19.4, 17.3, and 17.5. If you will only carry occasionally, I would definitely recommend the G 17.5. It is the most accurate, best trigger, and the most fun to shoot in my opinion.

I have abandoned the .40. With modern bullets, I think there us so little difference in real-world effectiveness, it is negligible, if any. If a 9mm has more capacity and softer recoil, getting an extra hit has far more advantage than any difference in those two bullets.

Most cops I know are telling me their departments have switched to 9.

I tell rookies who have no experience at all or point of reference, start with a used G-19.

LEO pal carries a 40 cal Glock while on duty, but wants a 9mm for range practice and occasional off-duty carry that has the same sights and controls. I could see this guy eventually using it for action pistol.

What do you recommend ?

The original. Glock 17.

Don't own a Glock, but say Gen 5, 34 MOS FS. I don't see a point in short barrel/slides at all other than for ankle carry maybe. What is it? What's the point of the G19 or 45 or 19X with the short barrel?

For your friend, the 34 will give him more of what he wants from a 9mm. What's the point of 9mm? Cheaper ammo, more of it, and less recoil. The 19 is only a parallel move in 2 out of 3.

I enjoy shooting my 26 just much as my 17.

With the extended mags for the 26 I really dont see the need for the 19. You get a couple more rounds in a slightly less concealable package, but the 26 is just as easy to shoot.

That being said I can conceal my 17 in the same holster I carry my 26 in pretty well. Colder weather dress I could and have carried the 17 fairly easy. Warmer weather would print a little more but I already dont care that much about that.

The 26 is just lighter and more comfortable while still giving a decent double stack capacity.

Get the same size Glock he carries as a duty weapon.

There's not much difference in concealing a 17 vs a 19. The 19 is the best all around 9mm made IMO.

I'd still go for the Glock 17. If you want some more fun, grab an extra Glock 34 slide.

Question: "What would you recommend for a person who wants a Glock that is like a G22, but in 9mm?"

Forum response: "G - 26,19,17,34"

Good suggestions. Keep them coming !

I can't believe everyone forgot the perfect suggestions!

We totally forgot about the G19x? It's so radically different from a 17 and a 19... AND ITS FDE!
How about G45? It's so radically different from a G19X! And it takes common mags!
I can't believe we forgot the G43, 43X, or 48? They are so close to G22 that the only difference I can tell is that they are a little smaller, single stack, and may have a different finish on the slide!
