Magnetospeed V3

I've had good luck with mine but I have only used it on rifle. Didn't know you could get an adapter for handguns. It is within a couple ft/sec of a Labradar.

I saw complaints about the gun adapter that on a few models it sat too low no matter what they did and wouldn't pick up the bullet. I have one, but not the rail adapter.

I really like mine. There was a little bit of a learning curve getting the sensitivity dialed in for different pistols, but no big deal. Just follow directions. The specs say it won't work if the distance from bottom of the rail to the bottom of the bore is more than 1". I’ve used it successfully for 9mm and .45 Auto on a Sig P226, a CZ SP-01, an HK P30SK and a Walther PPQ45. Just be sure the pistol(s) that you want to use it on has a Picatinny rail, not a Weaver rail.

Awesome thanks you the info! I'll be using it on my PPQ 9MM and PT111 g2. The site I looked up the adapter only had 2 reviews which both said it work but could use ome improvement.

For that price, I think I would just spend a little more and get the Labradar and not worry about getting adapters to work.

Lots of extra stuff to buy with the Labradar too. Bench stand, field pod, aiming reticle, suppressor mic, bow clamp... can’t just compare the total accessory + chrono price of the V3 against just the chrono price of the Labradar.

True, if I needed all of those things. I don't need anything but a tripod I already have, and it works with every gun I own.

I find it funny you mention bow clamp, is there even an option for that with the magnetospeed?

Not a factory option, for sure. I know some guys have messed with rear mount holes and articulated arms, but it’s not mainstream by any stretch, and I’m not sure how reliably it picks up the points.

I agree completely, especially considering the recent price reductions of Labradar unit. Recent "upgrades" of Magnetospeed are merely attempts to pump life in a dead horse.

One thing I can do with my V3 I can’t do with my Labradar is shoot indoors. Also can’t shoot spread target arrays while you’re doing load development, as the Labradar doesn’t track with you as you shoot - that seems like a narrow application, and for guys shooting on square ranges, it’s not a part of their world.

They’re different enough machines, it’s hard to say only one of them makes sense. I like the interface of the Labradar a lot better, and love the fact it is non-contact, and not in front of the firing line. I picked up an aiming reticle which helped make Labradar easier to set up, and the accessory trigger mic does help for suppressor use. But I do drive a couple miles into town to shoot the indoor regularly enough to necessitate a magnetospeed too. I bought a Sporter thinking I would save a little money, but then within a year I traded it in for a V3, wanting the more diverse mounting options.

Not so unlike having a need for a coyote rifle and a deer rifle.

I shouldn’t say indoors, since it’s not about indoors or outdoors (as a traditional light gate chronograph might have issues). It’s really a problem shooting through an orifice. Never any problem getting LabRadar to read in typical “open bay” indoor ranges. My local indoor has relatively small windows to shoot through, and getting lined up to read through the window is a challenge, and unreliable. For $180, it was well worth it to pick up a Sporter to make my life easier, since I do almost all of my load development work there. I also had trouble reading at an outdoor range at which all of the firing positions shot through a concrete culvert as their safety baffle - I worked there for over a year, and that was the only public spot I could shoot - I honestly have no idea how the locals did any load development with a traditional chrony, maybe they crawled down the tube and placed them in the tube? Or walked all the way around the baffle wall to set and check their chrony’s? No idea. But I know my Labradar wouldn’t read, and sticking a borrowed Magnetospeed on the nose made life easy - which is what convinced me to buy one for myself.

I get good service from my Bluetooth capable ProChrono but have issue with low light conditions at the range in the early morning, which is when I like to shoot.

I've considered the magnetospeed as an upgrade but I don't like it's influence on POI. I think that puts me leaning more toward the Labradar. (plus the fact that my friendly LGS has become a dealer and he keeps sending me texts trying to get me buy one)

I’ve only used my Magnetospeed on pistols, typically at 7-15 yards, so I can’t really speak to its affect on POI, but it hasn’t affected my group sizes at all. I can see where it might have more of an influence on the harmonics of a rifle barrel, though. Has anyone noticed groups opening up when using it it on a rifle at longer distances?

I had one rifle that the groups actually got tighter. That would seem to me that the load development isn't right but I couldn't get it to shoot any better. It will move your POI.
