Rust Issues

Before you consider putting steel wool to any of those rusty guns watch this video first!

Any updates?

I wish I could update my initial post, they told me they'll replace the safe, but they're not responsible for the contents.

Winchester makes the safe, they told me it doesn't happen often, but I Googled "Winchester safe rust" and got a few similar hits.

my wife wants to consult our family lawyer and see if it's worth pursing.

How much money do you think those guns are worth? If it’s less than $5k probably not worth pursuing legally. I’d be pissed enough tho that I might. What good is replacing the safe going to do, especially if the new one does the same thing. That’s not acceptable to me. Yeah, I’d probably hit up the lawyer just for the hell of it. Thats pretty crappy on their part imo.

there were 16 handguns and 13 long guns in the safe, I think that's easily close to $20,000 in guns. the pic with the rusty gas block is an FN F2000 which was almost 2k alone. plus some of the guns were sentimental to me like the colt lawman, the hk usp, and the sig p228

I'm obviously not saying the damage is that much, but I do know from taking the guns apart that there is rust on all the guns and it's because of the safe.

that's what makes me angry, had I kept the guns out of the safe they'd be fine right now, no rust or damage of any kind. the thing designed to preserve and keep them "safe" is what messed them up.

just wanted to give an update on this, Winchester refunded me for the safe but won't do anything about the guns. the lawyer I spoke to said he could send them a strongly worded letter, but that I should probably just accept that I'm not going to get anything from Winchester for the damage.

I've started working on cleaning them up, but it's a long process. each gun has to be fully detail stripped and cleaned since the corrosion is everywhere. from what I've done so far, everything is functional, but the stainless pieces look awful.

hopefully this post helps someone, I definitely wouldn't recommend Winchester safes to anyone

I will keep that in my mind when looking at safes. Sorry for your loss. I would be devastated to lose my guns and not to mention the money invested.

I suspect chemical outgassing from some internal build component of the safe. Basically I agree with SilentStalker.

This article is interesting. Reading through things my question was who actually makes Winchester Gun Safes? The writer here should run for office.
"Who Makes Winchester Gun Safes?
Winchester safes is the name associated with security protection since 1886. Many things have been changed since then but commitment and quality remain the same. They manufacture a wide range of guns.

According to Winchester won and west and now their goal is to protect what they have one. Manufacturing guns from 150 years of experience in firearms, these safe are even best available today. This is because of all their gun safes burglar proof and tested.

The gun safes are fire proof up to 1200 degrees, but many Winchester safes are fireproof in temperature up to 1400 degrees. The company provides various benefits to the buyers like replacement of the safe, free curbside delivery, and free locksmith service to unlock the safe.

You can replace the safe if it is damaged by a burglar or destroyed by fire. You can enjoy two-year warranty on the lock of the safe. And a limited lifetime warranty on the safe is also available.

Winchester manufacture gun safe which is known for producing high-end gun safes. It has a wide range of the safes available in different sizes. Let’s know the benefits of the Winchester Gun safes"

No shortage of words but the original question seems unanswered? Much like Sears Roebuck never made a rifle or shotgun they marketed and sold tens of thousands with their names on them. All made under contract and labeled with the Winchester name and logo.

Guns and anything else of importance do not begin to corrode and rust in a well maintained safe, unless they are exposed to something lethal when enclosed I have never known of guns to be suicidal. My guess runs with many who seem to feel something in there, likely toxic dry wall which began out-gassing Reading this story is also of some interest. Drywall can and will out gas sulpher gas which will corrode just about anything metalic, like guns for example. Think about the confines of a gun safe. If suplher gas is being released in a confined space where a large concentration of the gas cannot dissipate.

A court battle can be long and expensive and we can figure Winchester knows that, You may want to read all of that tiny print on the buyer agreement as to what is or is not covered. They likely have a liability clause for the container but likely nothing on content. You may want to find others who have experienced your nightmare and maybe room for a class action suit using attorneys who specialize in this type of corporate law.

Obviously your guns were not suicidal.

There's no way the person who wrote that drivel is a native English speaker...unless they're from Arkansas.

After their non-response, I will certainly cross Winchester off the "potential safes list." Good luck cleaning everything up, especially the gun you got from your father. I don't have any "heritage guns," though my hope is to leave some for my kids and grandkids.

As for the quoted blurb from the "safe review" (really, safe sales) site, it is laughably bad. It must be really expensive to hire someone to edit things. That's why my posts always sound a little off...

Indeed, that article was as poorly written as a walk-up noodle house menu.

We bought 4 of the smallest Winchester safes from Tractor Supply to put rifles in at our work offices a few years ago. So far I haven't seen/heard of any issues with rusting of guns or the safes themselves.

I'm sorry your collection got damaged, hopefully it'll clean up and not cause them problems in the future.

Stay safe.

Instead of steel wool, use the frontier big 45 pad. It will remove rust without damaging blueing. Gun restorers use this. Regardless of what has been said, steel wool will damage the finish.

Sorry about your firearms damage. good luck recovering anything from the mfg.
