Was shown this at the lgs, found in the lining of an old gun case. looks to be 12 gauge in diameter, roughly 12-15" long, threaded for a receiver and has flats for using a tool to install. The muzzle end also has a hole drilled for a bead sight to be installed. Aged patina overall, smooth bore. May this have been a special use barrel for civilian use or possible military?. No markings to give a clue.

It screwed into something, maybe not a regular shotgun as we are thinking. An older idea/option that was available many years ago?????? The coned end appears to be shaped, for fitting up to a chamber. Or could it be a type of compensator?

Trap choke for a Cutts Compensator. I've never seen one before, but I know they were made, and I know the flats look identical to the Cutts wrench flats. It would explain the hole for the bead, and being found in a case, as Trap guns are often cased as such.

Cutts Trap Choke makes sense, but I've never seen one either, only read about them.

I saw it and wondered if it were an early version of those sound suppressors for shotguns, just really long tubes that screw into choke threads, but seemed too heavily made for that. Assuming the inside diameter tapers from the bottom fluted end forward?

Back before we were born, Armored farmer. Papa G is probably right, more for Annie Oakleys, card and meat shoots. Cutts compensators were popular in the '40's and 50's until Poly-Chokes came out.

Bingo, an extension for a Cutts Compensator for card or meat shoots. Likely custom made. Back before plastic wads, in the day of felt wads and cardboard overshot wads a device like this could make the difference between being in the money, and second place.

I won dozens of card shoots with an old Model 97 and cutts. Shoot what you brung. I loaded the old Rem/Peters AA hulls with 27 grains of Herco, a 29928 Rem wad and 1 1/4 oz of magnums 7 1/2 shot. Never less than 50 hits on a playing card at 40 yards. Couple of turkeys down in Shawnee Forest. Used the tightest tube, .670 Spurfl if my memory serves. Rules changed to require club shells cost me about one of six entries. Sold the whole outfit to a KY boy who enjoyed it for years. Have a M12 Skeet and a whole set of tubes if the guys bring the game back. I played with making tubes as small as .650 and as long as 8" but never got anything to equal the old combo. Nothing equals th a old ugly corncob for versatility.

To shoot trap with a Cutts Compensator take your Cutts equipped shotgun to the pattern board and screw in a ,725 tube. Insert a premium light trap load and fire same ay 35 yards.
Check results...... install a .705 tube and check results. Compare with the .725 tube and pick your favorite sized pattern. It is that simple. If you are curious: screw in the Super Full tube and try it again. You may be very favorably impressed. In fact you may never use the term “ugly” again :)

My sentiments exactly.
