This is my first post so excuse me if I mess something up. But I’m in the market for a new .270 hunting rifle. I’ll almost exclusively use this gun for whitetail and mule deer. I’d like a classy wood stock bolt action. I’m wanting to keep it under 900. I’d also like the rifle to be relatively light to make hiking easy. Ive been looking at the Winchester model 70 featherweight and tikka t3x hunter. So which one do you guys recommend? I’m open to other suggestions too though.

Either one of those would make a fine hunting rifle so I won't be much help deciding between them.

Some other options off hand would be,

Remington 700 BDL
Weatherby Vanguard sporter
Browning A-bolt and X-bolt
CZ 550
Savage 110
Bergera b14 Timber(I think)
Kimber has a few woodstocked models

Not sure if the last two will come in under your price range.

Some questions you may ask yourself, do you want CRF or push feed, what barrel length would suit you better, how light does it need to be. Answer these questions and the decision will probably be made for you.

Good luck, the hunt is nearly as fun as the kill!

Two very different rifles. M70 is CRF with hinged floorplate magazine and T3x is push feed with a DBM. For me it would be a no brainer, I’d get a M70 cuz given a choice I’ll take CRF and I don’t care for DBM’s. Many people prefer the opposite. Quality wise I don’t see a difference between the two.

Hasn’t been produced for a number of years and used ones are rare.

Yes, now current production is the 557 with the shorter barrels. I was reading a thread recently that new old stock 550's could still be had but I may have misread it?

:D

The Walnut M70 Featherweight - is top drawer for classy Deer rifles.

Tikka's are sweet as well, if you go that route.

NTS - Check out Locked&Loaded.com in your pricing matrix.

I wish I could remember what thread I read that on. I may have dreamed that up? Wishful thinking and all.

I'm also a big fan of the 550. I was looking at the FS version in 30-06 not very long ago on the CZUSA site. I should've ordered it while I still could I guess.

I really love Bergera’s but the timber and woodsman (their only two wood stocked guns) are both just too heavy. They both weigh around 8.5 lbs if I remember right. The tikka is the lightest but the m70 holds 2 extra rounds and isn’t much heavier so I think I’ll probably go with the Winchester.

Well, I had a CZ 550 American in 6.5x55. The stock felt clumsy and more suited for use as a club. Sold it and lost no sleep.
I have 4 Tikkas now (counting the recent acquisition of a T1X:)). A t3 Lite in .270 Winchester that shoots 5 round groups of 2.75" at 500 meters and has been my silhouette rifle until I was able to develop some fine loads for the T3 Hunter (wood stock) in 6.5x55. It's nearly as good as the .270 with less of a beating. Then there's the T3 Hunter in .30-06. Not quite the performance or accuracy of either of the other two, but still within MOA and kills deer dead. Really dead.

I really like the Tikkas. They feed so smooth from that single stack magazine you want to check to see if a round actually went into the chamber. The adjustable trigger is excellent with no creep and an exceptionally clean break for a factory unit.

Other experience I have with similar price point rifles are Savage 110 (not as refined as either the Winchester ot Tikka), Browning a-bolt (excellent accuracy and relatively light weight), Remington 700 (a bit on the heavy side, accurate), and the Weatherby Vanguard (accurate, very heavy - built like a tank).
Of the two you are asking about, I do not think you can go wrong. I suggest you handle both, work the actions, feel the triggers, cycle some rounds and (if possible) fire a few rounds to see how they fit. The fit and finish of the Tikkas have always been top drawer for a production grade rifle. The new Winchesters are just as good and maybe a titch better.

Personally, I like the looks of the Winchester's Schnabel fore end stock better than the Tikka wood stocks. It's an aesthetics thing for me. Both are excellent performers. Buy the one that talks to YOU. If you don't, you will probably wish you had. :uhoh:

I have a 550 American in 6.5x55 and really like the stock.
As my younger brother always said, "Homely girls need love, too." ;) :D (He should know. He married one!)

I didn't say I didn't like My CZ (I still have my 527FS in .222 Rem.), I just didn't love it enough to lose any sleep when someone offered more for it than I paid for it.

I am a fan of Tikka’s, but they have really crept up in price and their wood stocks are pretty plain looking. I would be interested in a Bergara B14 or a Weatherby Vanguard deluxe.

I think my personal choice would be a used Tikka M695. Its still a tikka, but they used to put some really nice wood on those.

Also, the Winchester XPR Sporter (under $450!) https://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/mobile/product/53369/redirect

Hard pass on any Remington.
I don’t think the XPR is quite what I’m looking for right now but definitely something to keep in mind. Might get one at some point. About all I know about it is that the new .350 Legend cartridge Winchester came out with is only featured in the XPR. Does anyone know anything about the XPR?

And I feel the same way about Remington. All of my experience with new Remington stuff has been negative. Maybe ignore I found an old 700 in good shape I’d pick it up though.

I have yet to see a 557 that looked like Walnut. I ordered one 2 years ago and when I saw the wood I sent it back. They advertised walnut and it looked like birch or beech, plus the metal finish was not on par with the 550 or 527.

To the OP
Bergara makes 2 different wood stocks. The Timberland has a Monte Carlo comb and a palm swell while the Woodsman is a straight sporter like the Ruger 77. If one wants a classic walnut it is hard to beat a Model 70 or a 700 Classic or even a Ruger Hawkeye. I have never seen any benefit of CRF. I have turned a 700 upside down and chambered rounds without a hitch.

That’s a beautiful gun! I’ll take it whenever your ready to sell ;)

I’m probably in the minority but I prefer the finish on the Vanguard Sporter over the Deluxe. I’ve got one in .243.

I’d prefer a 695 over a T3x too.

F01763EE-4C8B-4B31-A03E-AE27102D2DF4.jpeg It’s not a bolt action, but my Ruger #1 in .270 Winchester is short and handy with that falling block breech. You might find a used one in your price range. This has been been my main deer rifle for 20 years. If you do your job one shot is all you will need anyway.
