Hello all! Thanks for letting me on the forum. I’ve got a chance to buy a Remington 721 in 30-06. I’ve had a few over the years and not sure why I ever go rid of them. Just gave one away last fall to my grandson that was a 721 with nice checkering in 270 win. Anyway, I can get this one for $350.00. Only thing is is that when you push the tab up just ahead of the trigger to remove the bolt you have to work at it, I think maybe it’s just sticking. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

Got my deer this year with a 1961 "vintage" 721 in 279. (Vintage is in quotes cause it's the same age as my wife.. ;))
It's in a Boyds stock but I hope to find an original stock for it one of these days.

Got one in 300 H&H when I was 14 for $81.00 new. Shot a bull elk with it a few weeks later.. I have no ideal how many game animals I took with it.. Gave my Dad's Winchester Model 70 in the same caliber to my Son and the 721 to my Grand son a few weeks ago.

Mine is in .257 Roberts... on the family ranch it was my Grandfathers’ “long distance” rifle (To him that meant over 100 yds,) and his open-sight Win 94 .30-30 was his short range gun.

Its been in the family for so long my 76 year old Mother killed her first deer with it when she was a girl. It’s been a while since I pulled it out and shot it, but every time I do it’s nostalgic

You’ll probably never get rid of this one...

Stay safe!

That bolt release is a flat lever that rides along the side of and through a pin in the trigger housing. It doesn't take much old dried oil or dirt to cause it to get lazy and drag. Sometimes it will push up okay but won't retract back down if it's lazy. Just give it some cleaning and light lube when you have it out of the stock checking things out.

I'd about bet it just needs some crud flushed out and it's good as new. From here, the price don't sound bad. Good luck.

on real late 722,s, when the model 700,s were coming on line they used 700 barrels with out the sight bump. they are so called transitional model 722,s. I own two, a 722 in 257 roberts and the last one I bought in .222 rem magnum.

here you are a 722 in .222 rem made in 1950, barrel code WW with a 26" barrel.

Trigger and bolt are probably really gummy too if the bolt release is. Got a 722 last year that was that way. Flushing the receiver with lighter fluid worked pretty well.

No doubt the WD-40 has completed its conversion into varnish.

Mines a 1958 300 HH. I love it!
I think a good cleaning would take care of your issues.
Enjoy it!

When you take it apart, you may find what is causing the problem. It could be as simple as a twig stuck in the wrong place, or some other foreign object.

I got the ugliest 722 , don't blame me I got it cheap. I just put a Timney trigger in, put on A dedntz Gamereaper mount and a Leupold LR scope I had banging around. It was a .222 but is bored "5.56 match " it shoots 55 grain M 193 ammo well not heavier green tip. It likes 50 grain varmint but bullets best. I won't show the four holes drilled for a side Monterey on the left side.Well it should blow escaped gas out there :) IMG_20190328_152713010.jpg IMG_20190328_152805187.jpg IMG_20190328_152805187.jpg IMG_20190328_152713010.jpg IMG_20190328_152805187.jpg
